It is so hot here! Any new designs on the parked AC front?

Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas for you, but you may think of changing the title of this thread to be more specific. Thus, you may get more replies by those that just skim the titles only. I was simply bored and decided to open your thread. Hope you get an answer to your question.

Have a bracket made to hold a unit in the passenger window.
It works great.

They used to be sold in the classifieds but the seller is having health issue, I think.

Ready to be crushed for this idea... but would it be possible to add an electric motor, pulley and clutch to the OEM AC so it could be run from shore power with the engine off.

Go ahead and make fun... tell me it would be impossible or not worth the effort... Laughing

I have a similar set up to TK's set up. Not as nice looking. I also bought one of those portable units that vent out with a hose. It can't cool the inside once the temp gets over 90 or so, it just blows hot air after a few minutes. Wishing for some new technology or something that was a "new" idea!

I think it is a great idea as 95% of the system is already there.
Make it happen, many will follow suit.

I'm no AC expert but it would also need a LOT of air movement through the condenser up front. Probably not just your 20" box fan, but some significant movement. That's why AC works better when you're moving down the road.

Factory AC equipped vans have a high speed on the rad fan that moves a lot of air.
It comes on (at the medium speed IIRC) the minute you engage the compressor.

On my converted vans I use pushing and pulling Zirgo fans.
Yes, mods need to be made for both to fit, but it moves air extremely well.

Debbie-

What BTU rating did your portable unit have? I had a 5200 BTU window unit and it was not up to the task.

one thing that you need to know about the portable units is that ALL of the volume of air they expel MUST be drawn back into the vehicle.
they do NOT recirculate and keep chilling interior air,. if the outside air is 100* then they have that much more work to do to chill and condition the air.
in a house situation they say to uprate the units BTUs 20% over what you would need from a window unit for the same space.

The portable unit is 7000 btu. Guess the kind with 2'hoses would work better. Kind of an expensive experiment though. Window unit is 6300 btu. I think we will try some insulation, and a fan. We are parking where there isn't even shade. Maybe should find a motel instead....save the camper for the tall pines (those few places not on fire)

I could probably sell both acs on Craig's list and get one bigger one

Here is my post from 2 years ago. Installed on my Dad's van so my brother could sleep in comfort out there.

I've never seen a double clutch AC pulley but it doesn't seem impossible. Just stack them? BTW some of these hybrid cars have electric AC compressors though I'm unsure of the voltages, likely higher than 110v.

I'll reiterate to keep the sun off and solar gain to a minimum

here's one van solution from this thread already about this same topic with a much more clear subject line.
Too Hot in the Van

(July in SoDak - 95 deg. & 95% humidity)

Result: kept interior in the low 70's for 3 days in full sun (hillbilly AC in drivers window)

Good point, Dan. We've found that having awnings on both sides really makes a difference in the solar heat gain in the van, even though Dixie is Pastel White.

Parking facing north and having foil/bubble/bubble/foil shields in the windows is very effective, too. Add a homemade turnbuckle hatch stay and you're good to go! Wink

People use proper, why not try to install one of these like a proper but different?

http://t.brookstone.com/whynter-eco-friendly-12000-btu-portable-air-conditioner

Could take out the Dometic and put it there. Just leave your food on the counter and it would be older than the Dometic fridge lol.

Could mount the insides of the ac in the closet or the overhead storage area.

if you have an existing a/c unit in your vanagon the just hook up a 12 volt dc motor and put a belt on to your existing a/c unit and run it that way or if you have 110 volt ac available put an ac motor and a belt and run the compressor that way.
