|
|
Hi folks, finally decided on what the 71' is getting. The engine is going on for the cylinder heads working over (edges flushed where barrel and piston meet head, exhaust holes opened up slightly so better flow and flywheel lightened, 4-1 header and exhaust) and also at the same time i am getting my baby lowered as this is not a camping bus as i intend to buy a full camper (probably westy) for that.
I went out with a friend of my mechanic's the other day who had had the same work done to his engine and you would'nt believe the difference. For a stock 1600 dp to go that quick is ridiculous so i can't wait. Will let you know the results when work is complete.
Anyhow, the question i am asking is how safe a drop on a bay is safe ? I have seen lots of differing drops on buses from around 2" to 5" so what is safe ? any advice greatly appreciated. _________________ 72' beetle (stock)

Iwould recommend takeing a ride in a lowered bus before you go ahead with it. Mine is lowered and the ride is rough to say the least. I'm planning on raiseing it back to stack height. Looks good, feels bad. |

anyone else out there who has actually lowered their bus down ? all i want is a little advice on any problems i may find after it is lowered. She is going to get lowered down about 3-4 inches all round (handling purposes) as the roads around here are not brilliant and some have real bad camber. Try having a good quarter lock on to just go straight on some of them. Also i want to try change the automatic lane change syndrome my bus seems to suffer from on the motorway (freeway) when a bird sneezes in my direction. _________________ 72' beetle (stock)

I am a "stock" guy myself, but take a look at this lowered bus on Greg Pott's wonderful bus site.
I always thought this bus looked nice, and the owner certainly knows his buses. You might want to email to the address on the side of the bus to get their thoughts.

I had my 70 westy lowered about 4 inches front and rear. I is a rough ride but worth it (Looks greats, Corners and handles the wind better). I live in North Idaho so the roads are not that great. I also take it camping in the mountains. You just have to be more aware when your driving (watch out for speed bumps). I your going to lower your bus make sure you do it right. Drop Spindles and boomerang kits are the way to go(So i Hear) even though its more expensive. Good luck

not sure on method of dropping her yet. Was going to install adjuster at the front and just do the spline turn at the back. Also get some shorter shocks as well, maybe kyb gas ones but not sure yet. Will let you know how it goes when work gets done in january. _________________ 72' beetle (stock)

Since you are looking for "recomendations", how about this:

A fatchick after dowing the "limbo". How low can you go!
I spoted this one at a VW Classic many years ago. Only one time I've ever seen it. It was totally sectioned and probably "bagged" or hydraulic'd. Nobody was around it to tell the story.
I'm glad I snapped the picture though. Many many years back (late 80's) when "S"ome "O"ther "T"ransporter "O"utcasts did their meets at Deer Park in Escondido, I saw the very first "S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D" bus This thing was made out of four buses and was running a T4 motor. So many windows you'd loose count! It wasn't completed yet, needed a paint job, but the guy did drive it in from Arizona if I'm not mistaken. I didn't take a picture of it because I figured an item as odd as this would surely show in the magazine. Well, it didn't and I never saw it again! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |
