Good Day: Could you tell me if that pulley that you have on there is just a pulley or a harmonic balancer? If it's a pulley do you notice any additional engine vibration from no longer having the balancer? Also where did you find it?

it is a really beautiful well-thought out job Skills -
did you do away with the stock drums in the back to use either after-market or a later arrangement with flange and drum for the strength? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

the brakes/suspension are all from a 78. sadly a vw yard sent me 71 "only" crap but the brakes are 78 front, 71 rear with the 78 rear hubs/bearing carriers. a bit more of an albatross than I normally allow for, but us swamp Yankees can't be fussy.
the pulley is a grimm speed
http://www.grimmspeed.com/lightweight-crank-pulley-subaru/
no vibrations, unless you are sideways and hit a rumble strip on the shoulder _________________

Just finished up the entire thread and I have to say, you are the man Skills. You have helped me even further along with my decision to swap a Subie setup into my 67 Beetle, and eventually my Bay Window Westy (I have yet to pick one up, but definitely on the hunt).
Thanks for all the cool photos and the inspiration man. _________________ There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.

thanks
not a swap for the faint of heart, but totally worth it in my opinion. dollar for dollar you couldn't build a stroker with the tq/hp that a stock Subaru offers and have it live a long, long time with almost zip for maintenance _________________

well, with spring in the air I decided to go and take care of a couple things that had been bugging me.
one was the rear axles stood proud of the wheel. just enough to piss off the pope...this meant that I couldn't install the center cap.
off to my super secret DOD machinist and had him turn these up
these allow the caps to snap in. much better.
the other thing I wasn't crazy about was my fuel filter location. although it didn't pose any real problem, it was in a bad spot, tucked above the frame rail and kind of behind the shock tower.
so I re-ran some lines and just put the OE Subaru filter in the engine bay
she got all dirty in 3K miles so it's time to do a good cleaning. I have a love hate relationship with my decision to paint the bottom of the bus. love that I did it, just hate to clean it _________________

You know I secretly hate you right? Every time I check in I notice something else super fun and fancy that you've done that makes me want to spend my hard earned money. Today's item... That billet oil filler neck (or lack thereof, she's a stubby one that!). She would sure make it way easier to get the bloody funnel in there and not spill oil everywhere.
Also. Please feel free to fly out and detail my engine bay. My subaru is a dirty oily pig... _________________ a Black & Blue Su-BUS-aroo

I know your dirty little secret. may your pig be oily only for a short time!
I love this money pit piece of junk. but, I will say the dumpy bus owners have it right. nice survivor with cool patina, original paint, bumps and bruises, but presents well. just easier to keep up with....as if keeping a bus in general clean isn't a chore, lets do stupid stuff like paint the frame...and every other metal surface...oy..
but, it is pretty cool to see your face in the reflection when you pull up the floor mat _________________

Maybe someday I'll have nice paint. You know... when I stop cutting random holes in places and installing unnecessary stuff. Though I do have some pretty slick power locks now
Oh, and T-minus 2 weeks till I unveil the EJ25!! So can't wait to driver her to Colorado! _________________ a Black & Blue Su-BUS-aroo

you will enjoy the added power for sure! the cams make a huge difference as you will see.
got the wheel wells all cleaned up
center cap extensions installed
started to clean up the engine bay
almost time to get it all dirty again so I have driven this in rain, on the street, down gravel roads and I have yet to find a chip in the paint in the wheel tubs. I was actually surprised. I figured they would have ben all peppered up by now. a little more cleaning and I will be time to go beat her up again. ahhh, spring _________________

I'm a major purist but I do have mad appreciation for that spectacularly executed engine conversion.

too funny!
really, the only thing "destroyed" was the rear apron. I found a far-from-perfect one to butcher up. other than drilling holes, it's 100% easily reversible.
I really tried hard not to destroy the value of the bus. the only thing I wish I did was install a late bay hatch or even a vanagon hatch. I think properly done it's kind of a value added modification.
you really don't need that hatch, but I could have laid things out a little better and cleaned up a few things.
after doing 4 more conversions I realized that mine looked like a junkyard threw up in my engine bay, so as time permits I will slowly change things here and there. _________________

that's from outfront. they sell a couple different ones. I have no intention of doing a/c so that got rid of the swan neck needed to get around the a/c compressor _________________
