My friends automatic 1986 vanagon has had this problem since before a GW 2.2 was put in and the transmission overhauled

Problem...
A screech on initial start
A hesitation sometimes on start, not always
Has replaced starter 3 times, same problem every time, after two years the last starter just packed up, a re-con by Wilson.

Things done..
Replaced starter with a Bosch from Germany$$$$$
Replaced battery
Replaced ignition switch
Installed easy start relay for solenoid
Cleaned ALL grounds
Jumped the main cable from battery+ to starter.
Jumped the ground - from battery direct to starter.
Sat down scratched head had a beer Smile

The engine starts ok, but at the end of the start is where the screech is, maybe it's normal on AT's, as my standard shift van doesn't do it.

Thanks for any input

Sounds like it's time to snug up your alternator belt.
They stretch a bit after installed & start to slip, hence the screech

Why so many starters? Was it NOT starting?

When any of the (4) bellhousing to engine fasteners are loose and or the (2) holding the starter in place are loose or unequally torqued, the starter will be misaligned with the flywheel or torque convertor while starting and make a sound that you do not want to hear.

Worth a look and retorque if you ask me.
