SOT - Slightly Off Topic . . .

The rise of 3D printing will mean you can make plastic items like the SA grill and Terra Wagen fender flares in your own garage or local Maker Space in under an hour and for a few bucks of plastic.

So, if you think those items are overpriced, get out there and "print" your own.

3D printing will soon be as common as having an inkjet in your home office, and cost about the same to use.

I have been 3d printing. The $2000 printer I have been using can only make small things.......a fender flare is out of the question. Small parts, like a Syncro knob bezel is about as big as it gets.

Dream on........

SCORE! $4 here, but this size and style if anyone else is wondering. That, and a touch of crazy glue on each and and Voila! I just saved $36. Should add that one end has to be up while the other sideways before you glue it...

Thank you Alistair! Very Happy

Any drawbacks to doing this, rather than the other, hand made one(s)? It will certainly work for the summer, but once I'm back at school, should be able to find a student to make me the other one if needed...

I know, you can use a $5 turnbuckle to so the same thing, but the argument still is valid.

On 3d printing... Our Alaris 30 printer was a cool $50K, carries a $3000/year maintenance contract and eats UV cured monomer at $600/litre. Way cheaper to buy the injection molded parts!! At least for the next few years...

Love the printer for what it is...just not cheap to run.

The bent bolt has tons of rustic charm. More than the bent sheet metal part and way more than the turnbuckle. That said, since a Vanagon is pretty much 100% rustic charm to begin with, anything will do, won't it?

Screw the apocalypse, can you come now? 3 youtube videos, 2 forums and at least 3 hours later, I finally adjusted my son's bike brakes, stupid side pull brakes, no idea who invited them, but I want to shoot him. Unlike the centre pull brakes you can't easily adjust these. Confused And, I'm guessing you could have fixed it after the first 3min clip. My problem, over tightened. Embarassed

Seriously, why the screw and not just bend the bolt end around more? I'm going to guess the screw end goes on the Vanagon and head of bolt in the door.

The turnbuckle works b/c the hook fits in the Vanagon side and the loop fits in the door side. My glue dried. I'm thrilled! If you didn't just post an under $1.00 idea, I'd have gone and bought a second one, so I can have an open a bit one and open a lot!

He's still doing that? I thought I remembered a few rants about lack of quality parts and that he switched to Sube?

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Word.

Sure a few bushings, knobs and interior parts could be whipped up in short order....unfortunately many feel the need to make gun parts from them.
That should raise a few eyebrows and limit what will be made available to common folk

Not in agreement that the Terra Flares are anywhere near overpriced Exclamation

I feel the need to also state that if a new vendor like Terra is going to continue producing very high quality pieces....they need to be supported.
Put some energy into earning a little extra coin and pop for some flares so they can move on to the next knockout product....not try and figure out how to make a similar homebrew to save change.

Just sharing, enjoy your weekend.

Sold three CS engines in the past two weeks. Those people know the definition of value and appreciate it enough to pay the price of admission.

Leaving the "extra zero" out wouldn't even buy one of the cylinder heads for this engine.

We of course still create aircooled engines, we simply added the suby conversions to the line up for the future. Quality ACVW parts are hard to find, hence the 12K price of the CS engine.

If you think the aircooled CS engine is expensive, looking at the price tag of my complete Suby drivetrain package would give you a heart attack and a stroke at the same time.

Most Outrageously Priced Aftermarket Item?

Cross border shipping charges!

No matter how hard we Canadians try to pool our orders there will always be at least one little thing we will forget that will cost us $40 more than it should when we have to place another order.

That being said, yesterday the FLAPS quoted me $85, "even after your discount", for a 2.0 CHT sensor... BD has the same part # for $16.95.
