You might try to remove the bushing. All my factory service manual says about the procedure is, "remove bush", leading me to suspect it may pull right out with a giant easy-out or the proper size tap. Just thread it in, grip, and pull.

Then you could install a 6V starter and the proper bushing. Soak the new bushing in hot oil and drive it in with a pilot pin.

That's a thought... but with the location of it all, it might be easier to take the engine out haha

I've just removed and re-installed motors in this thing 3 times in the past month... it really isn't THAT big of a deal, but I'd rather not... you always hope the last time was the LAST time ya know

Just lift the car up on jack stands and take the starter off - you should be able to get a tap on the bushing without bending your wrist beyond 90 degrees.
