My family is planning a trip from MD to SOCAL. Driving one direction and flying the other. Anyone have any low cost rental suggestions. We're thinking of a minivan. Thanks

I think just about any rental agency will rent one way....get the insurance.
Since I doubt you could find a 57 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser to rent. Confused ....
Whatever you find and decide, be sure its comfortable, fuel efficient.....and well ventilated...most important....have fun. Enjoy the adventure...

Too many people don't understand the way it used to be.... No dvd player, no GPS, only a few road games, binoculars, real paper maps, real roads....and all ..America...

Insert Lindsay Buckingham "Holiday Road" music ......right...here.

One way rentals are, as you know, horribly expensive. A minivan can run from $2500 to $5000. Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked
http://www.expedia.com/carsearch?dagv=1&subm=1...amp;rdct=1

Maybe just buy a cheap car, drive to Cali, pull the plates, and abandon the p.o.s. in the long term parking lot at LAX when you are done. Laughing

Yes, the couple times I have checked into it, the price was insane.

The only time it is worth it is when you wreck your car and insurance pays for it.

Drive yours and have it shipped back? Probably wouldn't cost $2500. Of course that adds the headache of finding a quality shipper and making sure you have a car when you get back.

It is expensive to have a one way rental. Drive your car out and hire me to drive it back, fuel food motel return air fair etc.

It would be cheaper to fly both ways.

Yes, except places like the Grand Canyon look a lot different from ground level than they do from 35,000 ft.

I'm always on the wrong side of the plane to see the Grand Canyon.

I think we have it all figured out. We are flying out and driving back. I can bring some VW parts back, hopefully. Mid size car, RT40 southern route.

I've been to the OC once in the early 90's. I visited now closed places like, Johnny's, Barrett Ent, Car Custom and BFY. Also Berg and FAT. I may only be able to get to one or two places. What's the best or most bang for the buck? Cal look/drag/historic locations.

Fly out, buy a rust free westy, and drive it home. Sell it when you get back...

Great idea, but the lack of a/c would put me in the dog house for sure.

Why not make a road-trip/round-trip out of it?
My family did an 8,000 miler back in the day from Oregon-West Virginia-Florida-Cali-Oregon.
Some of the fondest memories I've had as a child.

Fly to Ca. and then do a driving loop of the Colorado River.
Simpler than what you propose, and honestly you're crossing a lot of country that is a waste of time.
I did this with a buddy back in the 80's
Go to Las Vegas from LA, and then do Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, come back to LA, and then Fly home

Try for something with AC then. Sell it when you get home.

BINGO.
This sounds like the best plan yet. (except for the increased air fare of course)
