|

I am looking to replace the tattered old original pads for the coils where they rest on the rear trailing arms. They are available, but expensive.
Anyone out there had success with an aftermarket part? Also thinking of just cutting my own from some 1/4 in. Thick utility floor mat. _________________ 1988 Vanagon

Burley makes them, IIRC they are more cost effective than stock parts, but don't quote me on that.
Also using a good quality hose with a similar inside diameter as the outside diameter of the spring in question will slide over the end and protect it and the arm from rubbing.
Check that lower perch carefully as they tend to lift up from the arm.
Replacement perches are available to reweld in place. |

There ya go. The hose idea is ingenious.......
Just did replace the perch plates. Nicely fabricated parts from Gowesty.
Thanks. _________________ 1988 Vanagon

Is that all you use on the lower spring coil Insyncro? Meaning the hose? |

I was looking at a 2000 or so FWD passat, rear springs, and it looks like their rear spring rubbers might fit too. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

I have these on Crunchie, and one side has split, with cracking in several places on both. I have reached out to Burley, but have not heard back as of yet. I will be looking into other options. |

Looks like Van Cafe has a solution that should do the trick. Might even be made of urethane based on the photo:

They are a little bit on the spendy side, but it is the right part for the job. _________________ Jay Brown

I like the frugal simplicity of the hose over the coil,
but the energy suspensions pads are a nice price point even on Fleabay
but I've always just put a set of rear upper spring pads on the bottom.
I don't find the 3/8" added height any issues as the van is often loaded or haulin G'ass.. _________________

The only good fix is the original pad that VW provided. All the rest of
these ideas like hose over the coil spring are really bad ideas, for
several reasons. None of them address the seat problem. The sppring
should be fitted to the arm. IT originally has a seat along with the pads
to fit the coil. Any thing less is mickey mouse, as many have displayed here
in the past. Even the weld in seat the gowesty is selling is a cheap, poor fit
chineese part. Unlike the original. That's why I've replace 7 of these
control arms this summer. As for the pads I have not found a good replace-
ment and will not use the mickey mouse part mentioned. Good time for
a vendor to step in and made an original replacement, reasonably priced. |

After carefully examination this looks to be the original pad. $50 for a
piece of plastic puts vanagons in an entire new class of vehicles. Gotta
wonder how many of these they sell.

For what it's worth, mickey mouse or not, the same cutting board spacers that people use on the top work well on the bottom. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |
