Thank you to everyone for your compliments and words of encouragement! It's so great to be part of a community that helps each other out this way. I can't wait until I can actually display this car in person, not just in pictures. I feel like it is so close!
Thanks for the warning about the fuel pump Everett, right now it is just loosely bolted together with no intention of starting the car. The hard fuel lines were being test-fit after a trip back from the copper plater. There are a few other pieces missing on the engine too, like the oil pressure sensor and piece of tin under the pump.
(does anyone have an extra piece of 25hp style fuel pump tin? I moved to a new house last summer and I think it was lost in the move. I'm still kicking myself over that)
And as requested here are some high res pics of the clock.
Stay tuned! There should be a lot of updates coming very quickly in the coming weeks.

Will, are those fuel lines original that you had plated. Car is coming out great so far. I might have the tin under fuel pump. Will check tomorrow.

That looks amazing!!
Happy to be able to take part in this resto as well. I have been working on the speedo pod from this car which was badly heat-warped and Will was questioning using it at all. But given that the pod's ground fork was date stamped within 2 months of the 'verts manufacture, I encouraged him to let me take a shot at restoring it.....
I made some fixtures to apply pressure to this pod to straighten it, and then baked it at around 225F. The Bakelite actually yeilds to heat well at this temperature. and I got it pretty straight. But then came the "pod resto from hell"...
I painted this pod tonight, for, I think, the eighth time. I have actually lost count. I primered, sanded, painted, and then one spot fish-eyed. I tried to sand, solvent wash and overspray. No dice. Stripped in the glass bead cabinet, and started over. I forgot what happened next, but I had to strip and start over again. 2 sprays ago, it was perfect. Then I tried to install the lenses. Some paint had "sagged" into one of the light holes and as I tapped the lens in, a paint chip broke loose from the front. Strip and start over. 7th time looked good, but after drying, some block sanding "foreign object on the paper" showed up. Wet sand, spray again....
Anyway, I *think* I have it now. Still having trouble getting good repro pod lenses, but the Telefunken radio front plate and some reproduction "painstakingly finished to factory specification color" knobs that were a bizarre iridescent green color have also been painted to match.
Can't wait to see this 'vert finished (it will have nice wires as well!!!) and honored to be able to contribute to its restoration....

I admire your work John; building a 'warp correcting jig' for resurrecting Will's pod is like an archeologist preserving one of the fragments of the Door to The Ka'aba - You only get a single chance to do it right; but if you mess up, it's GAME OVER
And those finished pods are stupendous! |
Thanks for posting process / progress photos which we are all both educated (and mesmerized by)
Congratulations Will, you must be equally thrilled and excited for the final results!
(if your not suffering writers cramp paying for the expenses)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm glad you like it.
To agree with John: Yes, Dave H is a great guy to buy stuff from. He is honest, true, and in the hobby for absolutely the right reason. There are so many guys who would part out, strip, flip, etc etc just to make a few extra bucks, and that is the opposite of Dave. Thank you again for entrusting this beautiful piece of history with me.
After I had purchased the car, I noticed that the roll-up window channels were missing for the passenger door. I emailed Dave just to see if they were around. He found them, and mailed them to me without even asking for postage. You don't find people like that anymore. A real stand up person.
Another pic of the underside of a fender. Headlight bucket:
