Thought I would just chime in on these tires. I was going to go with the Mich Defenders but could not find my tire combo at Americas Tire Store... I read up on the P7 and went for it. I put on a little over 150 miles today, and I love these tires... if for no other reason the low road noise. I drove over some grooved highway in construction areas and I did not have the drone inside. My Ford Escape is noisy as hell on roads like this. _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

Figuring maybe 4500lbs max range for my tin top for any trip, I am good with these, especially since there is about a 60/40 rear to front weight distribution.
Rear rated at just over 3,200lbs and front at just over 2,700lbs. I think I am good to go... time will tell. _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

I don't understand your post. First of all, with a tintop (I have one too) the F/R weight distribution is very close to 50/50, not 40/60. I think it might even be a tiny bit front-heavy with just a driver. Secondly, you indicate your rear tires have more load capacity than the fronts -- how is that so? Are you running different tires on the rear than the front?
For the record, I've been driving on General Altimax RT ("Reinforced Tread") tires for about a year/10K miles now, size 205/70-14. They have an XL (98) load rating. I've been very happy with them.
Remember that with Vanagons (as sort of explained on the GoWesty site, if I recall correctly) it's not just a matter of static weight on the tires, it's the additional cornering loads placed on them because of the high center of gravity of our Vanagons which shifts more weight onto the outside tires than would occur with sedans or other vehicles having lower c.g.'s. |

225/55/17 rear
215/50/17 front
I have a lower center of gravity with the new weitec springs, and I have a wider foot print with the new tires and wheels. I lost the body lean along with the nose dive when braking. It is much safer IMHO along with better handling. _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...
