So.
Took out the Dometic to get it running again... Which was successful.
Noticed some rust inside, at the hook-ups.
Investigated further, removing the boxes from the exterior.
Wondering what to do.
Seems a shame not to get at this rust?!
Wire brush, POR15, rattle can paint the match?
Try to not overdo it, beyond the rusty area, hoping to not make it obvious.
Kinda nervous the rust is though and through, in a couple areas, and might disintegrate beyond the holes where the boxes mount? Doesn't crumble as I rub my fingers across, but...
Or, get professional help? Don't want to mess it up worse?
The insides look better tat the outside.
The photo here is the worst of it.

There are plenty of smarter folks than me who typically chime in but, from the looks of it, if you've got a dremel tool (or sanding patience), some POR15 and a somewhat steady hand, you can totally take care of the rust in the photo... Tape it off, Sand it down, paint it up & you're good to go. 90% of what you'll do will be covered by the hook-ups when you're done. (do the inside too....)
When you replace the boxes, get new gaskets as the rust there hints that yours aren't working so well.
I see you still have the original fiberglass insulation so, if the fridge is still out you should 1) consider removing it as it can act as a sponge but, more importantly 2) make sure that the bottom seam isn't starting to rust from the inside... If you've got rust around your hook-ups, I'd be rather impressed if rust didn't start working on that seam too.
Good luck! _________________ 84' Wolfsburg Westy GL 1.9 Manual |

Indeed. I'm thinking, even if I end up with a few milimeters of POR15 around the boxes (UV clear coat protected), if the edges are taped up nice, it might look ok, even if the repair extends beyond the box margins.
Might be a good excuse to buy a Dremel tool! _________________ ----------------------------------------------------
