Thanks! Well, she runs, drives in and out of the garage and will now stop soon since I just put in that $$$$$ master cylinder.

I need to install the battery tray and mount the oil filter and a bunch of other stuff before I can put her on the street.

Well I installed the one year only master cylinder and whoot we have brakes.

Went to take her down the driveway for a test drive. As I depressed the clutch pedal there came a gnarly grinding noise. Pulled the motor to discover a bent fork arm, signs of grinding on the throwout bearing retaining pins. and metal shavings. Wow, is the pressure plate to heavy for the throw out bearing? Or sized wrong?

There is safety wire installed around the clips because a heard they were notorious for slipping out.
I am so close to getting her on the road, what a bummer. Is there a better set up like HD fork and different retaining clips, etc. Obviously, I don't want this to occur again.

Thanks

first of all: way too much grease in there! clean all that gunk out of there!
secondly: wrong pressure plate (that's the 71- style), which is what destroyed your clips when you stepped on the clutch. see the shiny ring on the pressure plate and the blue paint shavings in the bellhousing?

thirdly: the arms of the cross shaft are bent, or at least look bent in the pics.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes the fork arms are bent. Ah wonderful to know that is the wrong pressure plate. Ok thanks for that.

Yes the shavings are more than apparent.

Grease will be leaving shortly.

So I am assuming that the same clutch will work with the right pressure plate or should I just purchase a new set up? Obviously, I will need a new cross shaft as well.

you could use the same clutch disc if it's ok and not slathered with grease.
since you're going to replace the pressure plate, i'd recommend putting a new disc in there at the same time (unless the one that was in there is perfect).
also consider a new throwout bearing, as perhaps that's where a lot of that grease came from? hard to tell since the grease is everywhere.

Thanks hazetguy. Much appreciated advice. I see now exactly what happened.

Time to order some parts.

Cool thread! Nice project for your son... Hope he appreciates it!

Was looking longingly at a rusty 1967 SC.... not sure if your thread has inspired me or frightened me. With limited budget I'll have to skip it for now unfortunately - I'm sure this one would need as much or more than yours did!

Keep it up! Definitely going to be great to have it running and moving on its own for you!

Most excellent!!

Do slide under in the next day or two, so you can check for any seeps at all the lines joints and the brake backing plates. Hopefully all will be nice and dry!

Can someone please confirm that this is indeed a 1967 wiper arm and is correct for my SC. This is the only one that came with the SC when I bought it. I have seen some in the classified section claiming to be 1967 but don't resemble what I have.

Thanks!

Did a search of the split bus forum for "Wipe Arm". Search box feature near upper left of the forum web page. Checked the "Titles Only" to keep the results from being pages and pages.

Got these:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?searc...=titleonly

The hook on the first image is a mystery...

Thanks for the search input. Someone may have bent it to fit a more conventional type blade. There was a goodyear plastic wiper on it.

It looks like a 66-67 long-base wiper arm except for the bent end.

Normally the arm is complete flat too - it sort of looks like round stock where it's bent into a curve

That is a big change in climate. Congrats. Hawaii has a huge VW culture. If you will be there next weekend they have the big Shaka VW car show.

Well, I am stumped! This darn bulb won't light up. I have power and ground with a new bulb. ? Should this bulb only have a single contact on the bottom? This one has two, just like the original I pulled out to replace. Each contact on the bottom is receiving power. I cleaned the corrosion from all the grounding contacts.

Idea's
