There are some photos summarizing the 1975 work from a few years ago: nothing serious just clean, clutch, seals, new oil cooler, all new fuel & vacuum lines, exhaust, paint, front window & door seals, and many of the other typical, now forgotten tweaks. Putting electronic ignition in this year, maybe a sway bar a la Ratwell.
Listen to me, as I know you will not...
Curious fall attire for country folk
pleasant, clean Idaho June shop
Components/shrouding coming back together after the machine shop
Paint - no I did not run out
Engine compartment of course, and door casings got painted
Late summer dangerous counter culture
The main point - happy trips into la la land |

yeah I am pretty partial to lime green The 1972 (the OP refit) is mostly white. I think for now we are just going to prime it all white until some color choices get made. Originally it is white, so it may be best to keep it that way.
Here are a couple more photos of the 75. Note the recent door & rear passengers 'fernal' paint job. It's a long story, but this takes the eye away from my arduous fix of this area following a painful gaak made all the way down this once straight bus. It's hard to make what was once flat steel look flat again, or spend the 3000$? to do it right.
(a very cool once upon a time rooster)
experimental versatile roof rack (with solar panel)
the garage...
FUEL PUMP QUESTION: I am placing the Napa fuel pump in the 1972, forward of the engine compartment, near to where the pump was located on later buses. That makes sense right (not in the engine compartment where I found it...). I want to hang this pump from heavy rubber so it doesn't make that metal on metal loud vibration - Have others experimented with that? |

Sounds like a good idea, though with an engine running back there, you'll probably only hear it before you start up. I hardly hear my fuel pump when starting, and it is screwed down. Either way, a secure mount is mandatory. |

Yup - thanks for the reminder. So many things being done/replaced at the same time its hard to keep up. Going through the gas tank process now. http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelTankRestoration.html#pump
Wow - 2 hours tonight just on the alkali Marine Prep (Following acid & pin holes JB weld reinforcing), etc.
How does that VDO gas sender even work?! |

I'll be working in MT - however, I strongly doubt anything will be finished on this Bus..... The 75 is ready to roll whenever - soon with electronic ignition (yippee ). Thanks for the heads up SZF!
GAS TANK LOVE
SO - easily on hour 40 of gas tank fun...
initial trouble shooting - me
initial water & air clean out - kid
removal - kid
breather tubes & hose removal
chain work, water wash, acid wash - kid
boiling on camp stoves - me/ kid
sanding bottom - me
repairing pin holes with JB weld - me/kid
painting bottom - me
Por 15 purchase - (67$) - me
marine clean & rinse - me
prep ready & roll - me
24 hrs of hair dryer & air dry - me
POR 15 coating & drain process - me (purrfekt 72 degree dry inland PNW late AUG weather)
And I haven't even started with the install, the new filler hose & large and small vent lines....
Yup SZF - no way in hell, not with kitchen alcove remodel, woodshed window & siding project.
Enjoying the ride though, glad I'm not driving ("driving makes you stupid")
Edited - the POR 15 liner looks really good

so who was it that said, "take your time & money, add half, then double it?!
(Like a boat - a hole in the air over rubber, into which you pour money).
Fall approaches!
ncstagger - I think ultimately the spare will go on the nose, it certainly does not fit on the front portion of the Riviera luggage rack. I used to have a full rack on one of my splits....: handy for lumber rack one year, but otherwise it was just a good looking wind catcher.
PS catch you down the road SZF - let me know if you end up in Moscow |

I've been in Moscow for a while now, but i haven't seen your bus around. Only ever seen a couple around here so I'll have to keep a closer lookout! _________________ 1972 Deluxe named Lucidity

took the bus into town today and it parked just off 3rd & So. Ashbury. It also visited Lynn street where it picked up some construction stuff and it crusied by its vanagon westy & little purple karman giha friends over on Monroe & B street.
Then it hurried home and went 70 mpg, back to its chill county road putt putt and back under it's ash tree summer garage.
It doesn't get out much. I am pretty sure it used to go up to 80 mph, but that was 15 years ago. |

oops. MPH! Sorry - not mpg....
I have been mucking around with my points recently after they went south on me last year. My miles per gallon seemed to get worse with power issues etc. I am still trying to redial all that, prior to installing the 72$ pertronix electric ignition. I'm waiting because I'd like to do a mileages test on the difference.
Anyway - one of the post tune up tests for me (for compression/timing) was top speed on a flat highway. It's kind of a joke of course with a loaded brick shaped bus. I kind of want to start a thread for year/ engine/ miles versus top highway speed....
Like I said, my bus (75 1800cc Air Flow control fuel injection - D-Jetronic?) did 80 once, now only 70.
It idles purrrfekt, and I can't even remember the last time I timed it. I have enough opened cans of worms, but I'll get to it.... |

the gas tank post POR15 - it looks really, really good inside. Added a new 5$ mixed cork & rubber sending unit gasket. Made up a new filler hose, although I was half inclined to use to the old one.
New rubber to all the air breather hoses (not shown), but note the accelerator cable moved to the right (passengers) side.... is that going to work?
New linkage (and carbs) from Kaddie Shack per your suggestions. It took me a while, but they seem to fit & work right; yet note where the pivot bracket positions the barrel nut.... on the right side of the engine.... (Also seen is the balancing vacuum hose between intakes, with T (thanks to Dave White) for the break booster (still to be figured).
Here you can see where a hole was drilled on the left side of the front tin, and where I am contemplating drilling a new hole for the accelerator cable sleeve (X marks the spot to arrive at 90 degrees to the throttle pivot). Make sense?
Not exactly Type 4 porn, but tying to get the job done. Summer in northern Idaho is over.

FOR THE RECORD: Copied from the sticky Stupid Question thread - (thanks for the replies Wildthings and local 1975250s.
Here are a couple of additional stupid questions in graphic form.
The passengers side forward of the starter, under the tank fuel feed is very busy and I don't want to complicate it more. Someone mounted a hot start relay under there as well, so it's a rats nest of wires that I am not looking forward to getting into. I'm inclined to remove it and return it to original wiring (I realize that is another question). Likewise, I plan to route the fuel feed away from that area and mount the fuel pump & filter over where it is mounted on a later Bay FI (away from possible sparks). Fuel will then feed back into the engine compartment on the drivers side and join the brass T Kaddie Shack provided.
Thanks for taking a gander. I am re-engieering, but am not an engineer. |

Ok, lefty to right. Left hole is original hole for accel cable. Plug it. Second hole from left- new hole for accel cable, use that for this set up, or maybe a little higher up. Squarish hole on right was heated air for OG intake, Can be plugged with sheet metal or left open, doesn't make any difference- air coming in is cool from under car. Round hole to right of air intake was hole for brake vacuum hard line. That is where the brake vacuum line is in front of the firewall. Use it for the brake vac line. The place to bring in the fuel line is to the left of the heated air squarish hole, shaped sort of U next to case, behind linkage in picture. Route fuel line thru there; be sure to shorten fuel line as much as possible along with the fuel filter forward of the firewall. There are tabs under the fuel tank to keep the fuel line and wires away from anything dangerous. I'd shorten up the vacuum lines to make it fit better. Of course, the OG vac line was a hard pipe from both carb manifolds with a tee thru the hole at the right. Just where the vac line is resting on the tab at the center of the firewall, there should be a captive nut for a sheetmetal screw for a J shaped tab that held the OG vac line( at least on my '72). |

If he has heater boxes he will be sucking in nice hot waste air from the heater boxes if you leave this hole open. It needs to be closed off. |

Nice chickens, must be a PNW thing I see a new thread starting, "chickens and buses." Especially since chickens are the new dog, and they taste so much better. _________________ "I will dream what no one else is dreaming, and will build what no one else is building" DaVinci I believe

hey thanks for the tips (preheat tube - got it). Don't worry guys I know the cool air/ hot air mantra. I've been dialing everything in, but routing most things (fuel, master servo vacuum line thru the drivers side - so much more room there). The fuel pump & filter I have mounted exactly where it is in my 75 FI rig.
I've got all the holes in the heater boxes & and all the holes in the tin sealed up as no stock heat is being worried about (as I did in my 75 [tons of man hours]),
The cool air vs. air warm deal doesn't matter so much when scoops are bringing in air from outside at 60mph. It's the sit in traffic in hot weather when one relies on the fan blowing relatively cooler compartment air, and the tin & gaskets keeping outside, exhaust-heated air out.
I have not bought a new engine gasket yet, but I will once I get this thing driving in the drive way. The bus came without one (go figure).
Yeah, chickens ! A lot of drama, but they are fun - kind of like a Bus ! |
