The 72 this late summer is getting some attention - being driven around the country lanes.... Getting the lights all working for the DMV....

Meanwhile it has been spitting oil because of valve cover gaskets. Whether cork or rubber, with or without sealant.... why not make these gaskets a little wider and a hair thicker?!

Meanwhile I found this new amazing thread for center pin replacement, and will put a link to it here (continuing the scrap book).

5) Lastly I think I want to put a bigger sway bar on my 75 per Ratwell. Anyone done that/ satisfied with the result?

Done it, it's easy and worth the small amount of effort and money.

I have bigger wheels (audi) and tires, so the thicker sway bar rubs my tires if I turn the steering wheel all the way to the stop (so I don't do that). You should be fine with stock wheels.

It struck me that the term BAY WINDOW must have originated around the time that Vanagons were being terminated (~1990-1992), and Eurovans were around. Because before that in the the 80s, it was the "Split Window (Bus), "the Bus" (the modern bus with the "pancake motor"), and the (new) Vanagon (i.e., basic models T1, T2 and T3). I am still curious about the otherwise obvious origin of the term ....

Fall 2014:

Well the oil spatter mostly went away, I guess. We're back to the parked position for the 72 although now it starts, moves and stops on demand, so the initial goal has been reached. Its a 4 year old's fav party spot.

Meanwhile the 75 contemplates its new sway bar and electronic ignition.

Exciting, presently unbroken times here in North Idaho.

Thanks for chiming in above guys. Also found this thread/discussion useful:

ACHTUNG

Fuel Lines - VERY CORROSIVE when left with modern gasoline concoctions in them.

CHANGE YOUR LINES. Atwell recommends every 5 years, which makes sense to me now. But that is only if you are using them - flowing gas daily through.

IF you let a bus sit, beware of weeping, pissing lines....

VORSICHT, GEFEAHRLICH !

Well its been a long time. I left the bus and the lad has now taken it over. He has an amazing school bus and a far more adventurous life than I, but this thread hopefully will remain as a record of our work on his 72 (with some nostalgia for my bus (the 75). Man I worked hard on that 72!

He painted the 72 blue - looks good chilling at Camp Idaho. Apparently it needs front wheel bearing or something....

So we have decided to sell our projects in the classifieds, which of course just leads to fraud attempts. Do you think we are asking fair prices ? 13000 and 11000 ? Or are those just ridiculous?

We are going to convert our efforts at restoration into paying back school loans. So it's really just debt conversion.

The 1972 remains in northern Idaho (saved from the junk yard 15 years ago). The 1975 drove across Nevada a few years ago and is in Auburn CA. They are both pretty rust free which is why we were so excited about them over the years. We need interested parties to take over. Perhaps more father / son operators - these buses could be taken to the next level.
