There is no way that a 1990 westie tops out at 10k.
MY 1967 fury convertible(sold it a while back) is worth no where near what they think it is.
They seem to be all over the map.

Oops guess I should have said N.A.D.A.

The book value seems very low to me.
According to them I should be able to find a running 1990 westy for under 5k.

Just makes insuring tough.

Kelley Blue Book is no different (at least, it wasn't several years ago)... except you can longer get KBB values for vehicles older than 10 years (at least, not easily on their site). Rolling Eyes Meanwhile, Edmunds has a perfect-condition '90 Westy listed at $2345 for dealer retail.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
As far as insuring, just tell them that KBB/NADA/Edmunds values are sure as hell not the same as market value... and show proof if need be.

I might agree, but....

I bought my Westy a year and a half ago for $8500, and in retrospect, I probably paid $500-$1000 too much for it (good but funky engine conversion with raised lid, and it needed a few fixes). No regrets though. NADA at purchase time listed "average retail" at $6800. 6 mos later it was $7200. I thought, "sweet, a vehicle that GAINS value!", and I still believe this if repairs are kept up with. I checked again a few months ago and it was down to about $7000....whatever.

Just checked, now it's listed at $6075...again, whatever. All of these prices are fair in my area for an "average" condition Westy, depending on the time of year.

I am betting the prices swing because the 'perceived' value of our vans is higher in the spring, and lower in the fall. NADA is probably just slow in catching up to this....

So, sell your van in the spring if you must! (and buy 'em around Thanksgiving when people want holiday cash!)

I haven't noticed them putting the actual sale price. The seem to put their asking price then just add "sold" on it. Doubt it's the same.

Question

Again, they show the asking price, then later put "sold". Just like with houses, it doesn't mean they got what they were asking.

NADA looks great from my viewpoint. It shows my '88 tintip at low retail being worth 6x what I paid for it. 10x at average retail and 16x what I paid for it at high retail Shocked To me the nada/blue book values mean pretty much nothing when buying or selling a car. A car is worth whatever somebody is wiling to pay for it. You will always be able to find cars priced way over or below what book value says they're worth.

I've bought and sold nearly 30 cars in the last 10 years and I think the only one I went by the book value on is our '11 suburban and that was only cause the bank wants to know the value when you ask them to loan you nearly $40k for a vehicle...

NADA does not work well with vintage. It is a guide dealers mainly use for trade value. It is just really a guide for a base, then condition, mileage etc gets added, subtracted.

+1. These guides rarely reflect market value on vintage or rare vehicles. They're best use is for a dealer to reference when stealing your trade in or causing ruckuss on an internet forum.

Wow, what a difference 2 years makes.

N.A.D.A now shows a 1990 GL camper topping out at 22,500.
More than double what it was.
