I have a 69 beetle.what's the plug in the middle under the trunk handle for? It seems to have removable plates all the way through. Just curious.

you are probably talking about the front hole the gear selector rod goes into...

Gear selector? Through the front of the car.? It looks like a plug that you stick a handle into and crank to start the car lol. My bumper is removed. I assume its not accessed with the bumper installed. maybe a factory build jig?

No, the first response is correct.

It, and the plate on the front of the chassis are for removing the shift rod...
