After seeing this truck at Syncrofest the year before last I decided I really wanted to restore/build a syncro doka.
I was also inspired by Tony's build here
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=486542&highlight=bamboo+yellow
I bought my truck from Lars (tristar connection) in Germany. Here it is in my parking lot.
It's a factory 4dr truck with power steering, both diff locks, heated seats and a few other options. Here's the build sticker;
The vindic canopy is already on its way to Daryl at AA. He purchased the canopy before the truck was shipped here. I also purchased a set of aluminum gates and tristar side door windows for the build. I think I'll put a canvas style canopy on the truck. I just like that look.
Here's the logo on the truck. Anybody have any info on this company? What do they do? The truck is from Sweden.
Here's a shot of the interior;
I'd say the truck is a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 as far as projects go. For the most part it's pretty solid but it's defiantly more rusty than your typical California car. I'm planning a complete stripping and repaint like Tony did on his truck, including all the undercarriage. It's also got one other body issues that I'll be working on.
I have not made any decisions about an engine yet but I'd like something that has fully functional OBDII. So that would be a 1.8t or a TDi.
I'll be posting lots more pictures as work progresses. Stay tuned! _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |

This truck is NOT a tristar. It's a 16" that was ordered with an optional 4th door. Tristars are all built on 14" platforms. The most notable difference is the Tristar interior, which is only offered in a tristar. There is no such thing as a 16" tristar. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. You know I'll be watching! Getting a crash course in all things 16" (just found out that non-front-locking 16's did NOT come with the larger front axles and outer CV's, which means I bought the wrong boots---DOH!). Mine is apart also, but won't be undergoing the full monty resto any time soon (it's actually not too bad rust-wise, other than the rear brakes, tank straps and engine tin). Should be up and running in a matter of weeks, looking pretty sharp too!

Nice doka. I relay like the colors.
"Hem El" means Home Electrisity, so they probably used this car for inspection and maintainance of powerlines. _________________ 87 75hp VW LT 28 Karmann LT L, 90 T3 Syncro 75hp AAZ Reimo Camper. 00 T4 102hp TDI Caravelle bus. |

Ok disassembly time. My wife gave me a wonderful compliment. She said "Your very good at taking cars apart" followed by Everybody has to be good at something I guess.
When I was searching for a truck I wanted something on the lower price side but not a rust bucket. My truck was a lower priced because it had a incident with a low bridge when it was on a car transport.
Here's a shot of the inside damage
The roof skin and the center reinforcement rail need to be replaced. The rest of the upper structure is fine. The seller included a magnum roof clip with factory sunroof.
The truck does have some rust issues but nothing I can't handle.
Here is where the gas tank straps mount
I'm still thinking about color. No decisions yet. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |

I'm excited for you Seth.
It will live again and feel so special with that factory sunroof.
What a nice addition to the sale.
I really want a Syncro Sinka to workover and upgrade.
I too will be watching.
Thanks for sharing. |

You call that rust? You should see the back of the Jagd. It apparently spent some time at the bottom of the sea with the Titanic. |

Looks like a solid truck to build up. The gas tank support is still available but yours looks very salvageable.
I don't have a vote for color but a dragon or wizard mural on the rear door would be sweet.
Looking forward to the build and checking it out at syncrofest. |

I had a couple free ours at the end of the day today so i fired up the air chisel and took the roof off.
Can you say Cabriolet?
i just use the air hammer with a cutting bit to take off the sheetmetal about 4" away from the seam all the way around. The ream work s done with this tool
It's a spot weld cutter with power feed and auto stop that is finely adjustable. Each side of the roof took about 10 minutes with this tool. Here is how it looks afterword.
Next i have to pull the windshield out and finish up the front. Then i'll clean the seams and treat them with wurth zinc weld thryu primer. another day. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |

I've been making lots of progress on the Doka. Pictures coming shortly. We're getting the truck ready for paint and I'm trying to decide if I should weld up the holes for the fender flares. My flares are somewhat beat up and I imagine that they won't look great on the truck when it has fresh paint. I've installed a few sets of 16" flares on 14" syncros but I have never changed a set on a 16" truck. What I'm wondering is how uniform the stud locations are on the flares?
If I buy a new set of flares from classic parts will they bolt right on using the current factory holes? _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |
