Found a 1965 convertible sitting in a field today. Good doors, 3 good fenders, good convertible decklid, slightly hit in the front right corner. Has working engine/transmission, complete top assembly and good door glass. On the down side the entire rear package area is rusted out, I can also see rust in the passenger heater channel area. The floorpans are gone but the reinforcing channels on both sides seem to be solid. Has all original seats.
Have no idea as to what to offer on this car. The metal work would be beyond my skills.
Thanks
Bruce

It's hard to say without photos. My convertible has/had a lot of the same rust problems you are talking about but was not a field find or at least not that I know of. How is the rust in the body itself? If you are not going to be welding on the car yourself I suggest keep looking because the cost of that much rust repair far exceeds the value of the car itself which is something I have had to deal with and I can guarantee is not always a very pleasant experience. That's just one opinion though. I've seen plenty of convertible projects/drivers for sale here on the Samba for $6K and up that were probably not as bad as the car you are describing. Is there a top still? The top alone to have completely redone including the frame could be like 5K.

That's weird. If one is bad, so is the other.

Sounds like a $3500-$5k car. Verts will always be more expensive to repair/restore. But they'll also be worth more in value when compared to a sedan/sunroof in the same condition

A field car... With rust showing usually has 10 fold rust hidden.

1000-1500 tops

It will cost 8-9 times that to get it back to good condition. Just enough to break even if you ever decide go sell it.

On the convertible I just sold the rain had run down alongside the two rear side windows and had rusted through the top and bottom of the heater channels AND the top of the convertible support brace....all you could see from the outside was a small rusty area in front of the rear fender and one hole where the water ran out the bottom of the support brace....CAUTION is your friend .... it was a nasty dirty fix and I have a mig welder and an air conditioned garage..... good luck....paid $1600..four years later..sold $4500
