This bus has been sitting since '98. My dad rebuilt the engine & converted the bus to a westy around 20 years ago! Here is the day we picked it up full of rats & wasp nests.
After some cleaning, pulled the engine, and removed the rats nests
put the engine up on the running stand. All i did was replace the fuel pump & remove the rat packed air cleaner she ran.
So i pulled the engine all apart & cleaned everything up, just rat shit everywhere
but now she's ready to go back in almost so i can drive the blue beauty
I know i may have gone a little overboard on the paint in places! |

Nice! Love the pinstriping. Question: you said it was converted to a camper/Westy...was it a sliding roof before that, or a tin top?
Orient Blue! Yah! Same as my '73. Love the dual carbs!
My '77 was also Mouseshit City ...even behind the gas tank. |

Well it was a tin top & apparently years ago the PO hired my dad to cut a hole in the roof & install a westy top & rebuild the engine also.
Love that color too. I'd like to figure out where all these extra "afterburn" pipes go and get a vacuum advance in there too. I have most the parts.
I once cut up a bus because it stunk like shit so bad, and i couldn't find out where it was coming from. Turns out it was a rats nest behind the gastank |

I got this '77 with all the mouse piss. All the seats were pulled and the inside literally hosed out with detergent, then bleach solution on a hot day. The smell remained, so then I went after the dashboard after seeing turds scattered around there, too. The smell remains.
My daughter spied a hole in the headliner near the middle upper handle, which looked to me...mouse sized. The otherwise perfect headliner is probably full of dead mice, turds and piss-stained headliner material.
Question: Will you be keeping that engine with the stock dual carbs and air box? Mine was built that way, but it came to me with a Progressive DFAV. I have a spare 1700cc engine with stock carbs/air box that will eventually get swapped in. |

Yeah, the brakes needed a quick going through for sure
Had to swap out the alternator the other day because i forgot to test it while the engine was out. Still need to get a new foam engine seal in there too. |

I just got some better front seats in there, but the westy stuff in the back needs all the material redone.
Here is the old original seats
and a set of wheels i bought for the bus, now i need new tires $$ $$
I got all the lights and signals working. I'm hoping to get her all tagged & registered up soon so i can start daily driving her.

The bus is probably 50lbs lighter from all of the removed rat crap.
Mine's the same, except I had to gut the interior, soaked with mouse pee.
Nice work on yours.

Oh yeah, between all the moss, rats nests, wasps, and spraying down the under chassis chunks of dirt built up in there, i'd say easy 50 pounds
Here is an old pic of the rear bumper tow package that weighed a ton too, I swapped it out for a nicer one.
I had to gut the inside too & scrub the walls & floors down to get rid of the stink.

So were you successfully able to kill the maus smell?
How are you attacking the surface rust on the floor?

Yeah the mouse smell is gone, i just blast everything out with the hose, and scrub everything with Ajax, or Comet. I haven't done anything to the rust in the floors. Most of the surface rust in the back i can just grind off and paint it. The front floor will need some patching eventually.
