I need some ideas for gauge placement in my '57. I searched for the ubiquitous "Show Your Dash" thread, and there isn't one in the Ghia section! So let's see them! Clean, stock, gauges, racing, modified, what have you. Show us what you got! _________________ Jason Hopper

Its not done yet but I got a 50s looking gage holder that is going to be centered under the dash. No cutting up my 59. The clock will be a tach. |

I couldn't bear to cut the dash. I made a set of "Ghetto" gauges. Oil & Temp. 2" pvc, gorilla tape and a couple of old bezels with a dash of Velcro. Viola!
I unplug them when I get to a show.

Here's what I did with my '66 convertible:
Flat-4 GT steering wheel (replica of the original EMPI GT steering wheel of the late 1960s-early 1970s) with stock trim and AM radio still hooked up to the centermount dash speaker. Dash pad is an ill-fitting one for 1968+ model years, as the original 1967 and earlier dash pads with the grab handle are unavailable.
I sent my clock to North Hollywood Speedometer to get converted into a tach that is a replica the VDO 6,000 rpm tachometer that was an original dealer installed option, with the difference that mine is 12V instead of 6V.
Under the dash, I installed two 2 1/16" (52 mm) VDO gauges: 1) a Series 1 (white needle, chrome bezel) oil pressure gauge and 2) a cylinder head temp gauge that I had North Hollywood Speedometer convert from Cockpit (black bezel, red needle) to Series 1 look. The speakers in the kick panels are hooked up to an amp in the trunk that powers my i-Pod/MP3 player. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

My plan is to keep it as clean and original as possible, but when it comes to the DD duties it will soon be subjected to, a few more gauges start to be pretty important. I'd like to avoid cutting the dash and I need access to the fuel reserve tap, so a center console is out of the question.
Present thoughts are to put a Dehne fuel gauge between the speedo and the clock (which will likely be converted to a tach). After that, I'd like to have at least oil pressure, oil temperature, and CHT gauges. An ammeter would be nice to let me know how the electrical system is doing and as a backup for the dummy light.
Since I live in the mountains, an a/f gauge is not a bad idea as my present daily altitude changes are >3,000'... That's at least a jet size coming and going and one of the reasons I decided to sell my '62 panel bus DD... Fuel injection would take care of that, but I don't think it's in the budget in the near term future. Since I do ultimately plan to run fuel injection, any remotely permanent mounting of such a gauge would be bad...
Just need a bunch of inspiration, and since these "Show Us Your Dash" are ubiquitous in every model section (of nearly every automotive-themed forum), it's a good thing to have. _________________ Jason Hopper

@Sactojesse, I have read that the flatfour wheels have a lot of flex in them. How do you like it?
Weak Pic of my 68 coupe thru the ragtop. Also have Cyl head temp and volt meter behind the shotgun seat.

I love my Flat-4 wheel! Haven't noticed any flex issues.
BTW, I love how you got rid of the fake woodgrain and dash pad, but retained the speaker grill and grab bar. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

My 66 dash. And before everyone crucifies me I did not cut the dash! I bought the car that way. I pondered about fixing it during the restoration but decided to leave it alone. |

That looks great - especially with that steering wheel. |

Is that a steering column mounted gauge setup you have there? What's the story on that? _________________ Jason Hopper
