I inherited my PopPop’s 1965 12v 1600cc CV Ghia recently; 220k miles; 2nd owner and garaged life. I want to do an air intake conversion from the antiquated oil bath system but want expert advice on what kind and how to transition; for example, do I just plus or vent plug the port to the oil reservoir, etc.
Thank you! |

Welcome to TheSamba. Congratulations on your Ghia. You are fortunate to have a lot of history with your car. Have you done any research about the "antiquated oil bath system" ? These are very well designed and when properly serviced, they do an excellent job at filtering out contaminants. I've read that they are better than a paper Air filter element.
We love picture here so please post some pictures of your Karmann Ghia so we can enjoy another Ghia. _________________ Marc

Do not plug the vent on the oil filler. That is the crankcase breather, and plugging it will cause an increase in crankcase pressure, which you do not want.
On a stock engine, there is nothing wrong with an oil bath filter. And one advantage of oil bath filters is that they do not become more restrictive as they become dirty, because the dirt/dust/debris gets trapped out of the air's way at the bottom of the oil, rather than in the air's way on a paper filter.
Now if you're building a larger displacement engine, then you'd definitely want to use a paper or mesh filter. But on a stock 1600, there's not really anything to be gained by switching. _________________ Currently own:

I have a 1972 Ghia with a 1600 and the original oil bath air intake. When we take it to car shows/events/cruise-ins, I get a lot of interest in the oil bath, because it's not something you see every day. Especially to the non-VW owners. Even though it's stock for the car, it's still a very unique feature for most people. In some ways it's better than a paper element, and as stated above there isn't an advantage to switching to paper on a stock 1600.
Just my opinion, but why do away with such a cool and unique feature of the car? |
