Basic Wiring Question!

After perusing my Bently and VW Resource (showing a great colored link to all VW Wiring, by the way), I have a question.

Some components have a wire coming from them that terminates in a small circle. Inside this circle is a number--like 10 or 11, etc.

What exactly is this numbered circle? It's not the electrical device and doesn't appear to be a ground. The legend doesn't say what these numbered circles are, either--and they're not track numbers.

Anyone know?
