Just picked up a 71 850 Racer Coupe.
Rare car, last tagged in 77 so I've got some work ahead of me
Any other Fiat fellas around here?
Looking for resources, parts suppliers, general knowledge...etc.
Have pics, but can't host them here.
If you wanna see it, host some photos for me.
Plans are to get it running & driving w/ the 903cc powerplant, but I'm not made of money... _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Well i guess its a good thing that its an AZ native and been parked under a car port since 1977.
Not exactly New Jersey out here
Like the Spider, keev. 69? 70?
For sure better looking than either of the two in the back. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

When I was living in Australia in the 90s I had a 1976 128 3P.
Not much to look at, but it was a lot of fun to drive. Before I bought it, it had a hard life. The timing belt had broken causing damage to the engine. The previous owner removed the head, threw it in the hatchback, and abandonded the project. My room mate was a gear head and helped me rebuild the engine and get the car back on the road. Good times
As I found it.

I cut my teeth (wrenches?) working on Fiats in 1975 at Marque Motors in Monrovia, Ca. Got plenty of experience doing head gaskets and valve jobs!
When I customized my '61 sun roof, I painted it a 1973 124 Spider color called Ocean Blue (looks like Turquoise/Turkus but richer).
If I found a worthy 850 Spider, Racer or X1/9 I'd sure consider a VW power unit swap. That would be a hoot.
Good luck with it and have fun. _________________ -Bruce

I don't have one or particularly want one but do the new fiat 500s appeal to you classic fiat people or is there something like the aircooled water cooled divide? |

Well having had my share of fiat's over the years. I owned 5 124 coupes at one point. Yes they all ran and drove just fine. The trick I found is to go through every electrical connection and clean and re assemble with dielectric grease. Most of the grounds are pinched between plastic and painted studs in the rear and front of the cars. Making proper ground studs does wonders for the lighting.
So far there are a couple of vendors that are good to deal with. Vicks motorsports has just about anything you might need. International is ok but they cater more towards the 124 and alfa scene. Spider.com is good for info but they are mostly 124 guy's but will help with the 850 crowd. Mirafiori .com is also a good place to go to for tech questions. Guy Croft in England is probably the most well versed person on making power from the 2liter fiat motor but a lot can be carried over to others. Watch on craigslist as every once and a while I come across people selling Abarth speed parts for 850 spiders and the like for very little coin. I'm guessing they have know clue as to what they have. The people that do know what they have will be asking a kings ransom for the parts.
Good luck and remember the motor is a reverse rotation motor. |
