i.e. an alt. thread on how to do it...

Form perusing the "I hate people who criticize my cult car" it seems you need some combination of:

1. Skills and endurance to make repairs yourself (together with a good set of luxury tools, a lift, and a paint/body shop), and

2. Lotsa money and a local shop you with Vanagon specific experience that can be trusted

- anything else? or is that enough?

Edit:
oh yeh...

3. a source for parts that do not fall apart right away

and...

4. low expectations

Loving my Vanagon, gets many looks even though it is fugly (still trying to figure that one out) I am also still trying to adapt to parking the damn thing... I feel like I am right on top of the car next to me as I swing in, and I am usually miles away. Same applies to judging the distance in front.

BTW I am in the #2 category... EDIT: I WAS in that category- no mo money)

Totally true, if lacking proper tools and skill (or at least desire to learn) and don't have bags of cash I see little chance of Vanagon ownership being a happy ride.

I expect to spend money on my ride and try my best to buy the best parts when I do. When my skills are not up to part I am humble enough not to blame my Vanagon as being the problem.

Please don't feed the jealous troll. Feeding the resentful one was bad enough.

I don't get what this is about, stiring the pot?

In my opinion, there is a whole world in between #1 and #2.

Reading Randy's recent posts, I suspect he is a closet disgruntled Vanagon owner despite his many 1000's of posts and long term presence of this fourm.

Wonder if he'll shoot some nasties at us as he departs as well? Think

That other one, the guy who left and blasted the community here, was a spreader of bad vibes. Even if some things he said had some validity, that was overshadowed by the nastiness of his departure note.

Imagine if he'd said:

I'm moving on to a different kind of vehicle. The Vanagon was fun but I couldn't make friends with some mechanical aspects of it.
(He could even have enumerated those aspects for clarity of his message.) I appreciate the help that was available here. I wish you all the best and I'll wave if I see you on the road.

Things would have been different, then.

Nobody ever suggested Raven had a lock on negativity and bad vibes.

I just returned from a really nice gathering of Vanagon kindred spirits. We got poured on yesterday, but the mood was nourishing to the soul.

The Westy even endured a 100 degree traffic jam due to a burnt vehicle - not a VW. Hi-speed fan sure got a workout, though.

Here's hoping this thread will die quickly (if nuts like me quit perpetuating it).
