I doubt you will ever find a production figure. In 77 VW made Champagne Edition buses. Very rare... Your 78 is a Champagne Edition II. VW made the II in 78 and 79 in both bus version and Westfalia version. Here are 4 pages of the Champagne Edition II brochure:

The site you can't open was probably this one?

Interesting. My 78 Safari Custom Camper must be on a Champain II, it has that same color combo under some brushed on Green, along with the cloth/vinyl interior. Too bad the body and interior are in pretty poor shape.

I have seen brown/white 78 Westfalias that were not Champagne editions. The best tell tale sign of a Champagne is the brown dashboard. All other busses have black dashboards. Other obvious options on the Champagnes were clocks, chrome bumpers, and variations of brown mocha exterior paint and/or stripes.

Yeah, my dash is brown with a clock and the chrome bumpers, as well as a whale tail 18" high fiberglass top.

Hi Dave
You don't live to far,I am over the other side of Honesdale-Lake Wallenpaupack. The camper needs some work. Itneeds a rear corrner bottom and tray ( have the parts ) All the camping gear is there, and is in good shape. Interior is in real nice shape. I brought it home and haven't got it running yet,I hate F.I . Too many other things to work on . Needs paint, and canvase and TLC. Drop me a line at [email protected] so we can talk over the phone.
