I haven't had a vanagon in many years and find myself wanting one again. I'm looking at a pretty clean, reasonably priced '87 Wolfsburg with a 4 speed. When did VW upgrade the 4 speed 86? 87? Since I haven't plunked down any cash yet I'd like to make sure. Thanks _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |

Late 89 I think.
Note the 3/4 slider will still break.
My 90 broke around 200K.
No magic, just expect a rebuild if it has not been done _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Thanks, I couldn't find it!
I was really searching for a 91 base model with A/C but this '87 van is so clean and affordable I'm going to buy it anyway.
We can do the transmission in house whenever it needs it. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |

Also, by this time many of the early transaxles will have been rebuilt with the later part. |

Correct, so there wont be any pro-active disassembly on my part!
I do know however that if it fails it will only do so 300 miles from home and my wife will be with me! _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |
