I have the long block assembled for my '63 T34, and I'm test-fitting all of the tin and whatnot before I have it powder coated. I have an "NOS" muffler of unknown provenance, but the little metal tubes which go between the fan shroud and the heater boxe don't line up very well. The amount by which they miss is about the same on each side.

Do I have the wrong parts, or do is this one of those cases where new parts just aren't that great? I have an extra set of connector tubes that I could sacrifice to 'stretch' these to fit, but that seems wasteful.

Stupid question- you have the rubber collar connectors, right?

Yes, I have the collar connectors, but this is so far out of whack that it will be difficult to install them, and they'll probably tear in a short time anyway.

Here's a pic of my other motor. There's a little bit of offset between the pieces, but not nearly as bad

Is the sheet metal surrounding the small rear heat exchangers welded to the pipes, or just crimped like on Bugs? On my old Bug, I often had to rotate/adjust the sheet metal surrounding them until they lined up right.

I think if you tighten the muffler down it'll line up better. I see a big gap where the upper part of the exhaust flange meets the head.

What's up with the welding in the first photo? Was the upper left flange repaired?

When I first tried to install it, neither outlet on the driver's side lined up - meaning both the connection to the heater box and to the fan shroud were both off by a significant amount. I drilled out the spot welds and rotated the clamshell so that it would at least line up with the heater box. The passenger side lines up OK with the heater box, but not with the fan shroud.

I wonder if these "NOS" parts that are on the market now were really QC rejects that never made it through the original supply chain. I have another "NOS" early T3 muffler and it won't even fit on the exhaust studs - I will have to rotate the flange about 5° on each side. That being said, the NOS muffler I used on the last motor was perfect.

That will line it up slightly better in one plane, but if you look at the other pictures, it is way off in the other plane.

I had to break the clamshell loose and reposition it to get it to line up at all. It was originally pointing about 15° away from the heater box.

I installed the other NOS muffler tonight, and it fit somewhat better. This one has a lot of shelf wear, and it took some 'adjusting' to get it to fit, including cutting off and re-clocking one of the flanges. There is evidence of someone trying to fit this previously, and apparently they gave up.

I guess in order to use the other muffler, you would have to use paper tubes or something instead of the metal couplers.

That looks like it fits much better. Cool I guess it can go to powder coat, and ceramic coat now. Wink

Yes, the engine is running in that picture. It is easier to sort out various issues with the engine out of the car.
