I turned the key and the engine jumped to life, and then assumed a low purr. In fact, the engine idled so silently that from the driver’s seat it was impossible to tell if the car was even running. No vibration, no sound; the engine was perfectly balanced and perfectly tuned. The only evidence of life was seen by reading the tachometer. |
I know this feeling exactly. even outside the vehicle it's a very quiet low purr like a big cat sleeping and purring. |

And people feel the need to post, "why should I consider a Subaru" threads.
Baffling.
The Nacho blog is a great reference point for those still baffled.
I will most certainly be referencing it and posting the link to it when conversion questions are asked....which should be any minute now.

If you do it yourself, I can't see any reason why you couldn't do a engine swap for that kind of money. Kits are usually $1,5k to 2k from what I've seen. Even if you have to put $1,5k in buying the engine and fixing a few things you are still at $3k-$3,5k so even adding another $500 in misc costs you are $4k on the high end..
Honestly I think it can be done cheaper if you shop around for the motor and keep the conversion to the bare essentials. You don't need stainless steal exhaust systems and every little doo-dad that the various conversion companies sell.
JMHO please no one start a war on why it has to cost $10k,, |

In the USA, you get what you pay for.
$4,000 for a 2.5 conversion will get you a $4,000 2.5 conversion.
I personally have tried to help debug one costing around that.
The wiring harness was a piece of work...I mean shite. |

The prices I mentioned above would be a DIY install. I'm not saying you are going to pay any competent shop $4k and get a conversion done in the US. I understand 100% why shops charge more. I'm just saying if you are capable and willing to do the labor, you should be able to do a install in that price range. |

The one I am referring to was DIY and had to be removed, another harness purchased and sent for professional modification by the known expect on the subject.
My time was donated BTW.
I believe it ended up costing about $7800 total for the conversion to actually run properly and than the $800 junkyard motor crapped out.
This particular non running van was sold in the Samba classifieds for under $5000.
Just sharing some DIY experience that I helped with after the fact. |

Labor is what is really expensive int he USA.
But don't complain! We have a better standard of living than many, there has to be a cost to that.
In Peru I could have gotten a Toyota turbo diesel installed for under $4000. And I'm sure here in Bolivia it would be similar. And don't believe the naysayers, there are plenty of very competent mechanics in Latin America, you just have to be competent yourself when looking for one, just like it is in the USA. _________________ 1989 Westy AT, 2.2 GoWesty.

I paid for the Labor on my conversion because of circumstances I couldn't do it where I was living (I'm in Hawaii, Van was in California). I probably paid a bit more than most for the engine, 2009 2.5 w/ 19k on the clock.
Having a low mile late model engine in the syncro..... Priceless!!
15000 trouble free miles later, no regrets. I can't see being in the situation where it would make sense to pay for the labor again, but I would wholeheartedly recommend spending the extra money for a low mile motor. _________________ 86 syncro CHC, NorthWesty subbie 2.5, decoupler, locker, custom interior, 225/75r16 Duratrack's on CLK's, Toyo cabin heater, ARB fridge, 300w Zamp Solar, Gowesty bumpers/skid/rails, Fiama awning
