Tune in, turn on, drop out. Worked for me. Bought my first house at 23, paid off at 29. Never worked for anyone after that, total self employment and mostly retired by 45. I work because I enjoy it. Plus I have plenty of time to snoop out good deals on VW's. Its not about what you make: its about how you spend. Never bought a $5 coffee in my life or a $12 hamburger.

I did start retirement savings in my 20s. At that time Series E Bonds. Married a wonderful woman who is way smarter than I and really solid with money. Later came a 403B. I also worked 30 years in Federal Civil Service which gave a decent pension and lifetime access to reasonably priced health care. House we bought in '83, remodeled heavily in 87/88 and paid off around 2007. We avoided consumer debt for the most part.
Kids are all out of school and on their own. None of them are still "on the payroll".
I have been retired now for 9 years and love every day, hour and minute of life.
Life can be good if you take the time to look beyond today and into future.
VWs? Well the thought frequently crosses my mind that maybe, just maybe I may be getting too old for old cars. The thought of a big crash with no crumple zones and air bags is scary.

10/15/17 - 2014 Acura MDX 5000 pounds vs light Honda CRV. She ran a red light in the CRV. MDX front end pushed back 2', totaled $40K damage but the MDX won compared to the CRV ~ never knew there were so many air bags in a MDX - head, side of head, feet, knees, passengers, side bags all the way to the back. Even so a month later I am still sore and getting checked out for collateral damage. I agree that modern cars have lots of protection. She and her kids walked away too thank god but the front of her CRV was like gone.

In 2009 Colin got into a high speed head on with in his 1973 bus. The bus won. She went to hospital, they never found one of her tires. Colin walked away. All the energy went under and around him. Not so for her. Early bays aren't quite as safe but a heck of a lot safer than many cars of that period. Low back seats are one of the risks.

^^^^ THAT was fucking funny, and well played Applause

I've been loosely following this thread....truth is even a pinto is a 8K car now. it is what it is. if you're "priced out" perhaps you shouldn't own one. sorry, it is what it is.

look at square body chevy's....huge $$ in a nice sbfs 4x4....supply and demand. there is nothing "cheap" about anything old....from houses to cars.

and if you think you're going to "save" money by buying some clapped out pile you'll be in for a huge surprise.....buy a nice one for 30K, or spend 27K and every free minute for the next 4 years building one...it is what it is

Skills nailed it. The biggest hurdle is the initial purchase. After that, you better be in it for the long haul and that means have either deep pockets to pay for someone else to do the work, or you do the work yourself over time. Most either don't have the deep pockets or don't want to do the work.

I own 2 really old things... My bus, which will be 50 in Feb., and my house which turned 90 years old this year. Both keep me busy with continuous tinkering plus the money flowing out of my bank account. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Like Skills said, if you're feeling priced out, maybe they're not for you.

I look at additions like these to the Westfalia Bus as that 7k bathroom remodel to the house that added 15k in equity to the overall home. Wink

When I listed my 63 notchback dripping with accessories - I gave the option of with or without. No one entertained the lower price and wanted the extras.

I will have no problem being in my 50/60s as a guy that had, used, enjoyed these things only to move on and sell at the right time....... sipping my MaiTai in Hawaii. Wink

I wont miss any of you assholes Laughing Cool

I think this is true. There are many people who have no issues with cracking their wallets open and buying the best available part, bug or bus or whatever VW. We all bitch about the cheapass VW owners and there's plenty of them. But there's also the experienced VW people who get that it's worth crying once at the purchase price.

I guess the price of burgers has gone up. I eat 99% of my meals at home, I don't enjoy restaurants. Grass fed is best for flavor in my book. Those kind of expenditures could interfere with a VW Bus budget..although there was a running 73 automatic on CL in Pueblo very recently for 2K. It looked ok.

If ya want a Bus bad enough, a Bay is still way more in reach than a split.

Nice! That's a great number right there. I bet the average American eats less than 50% of their meals at home or packs a lunch. I'd also wonder what percentage of Americans weekly income goes to eating out. And we wonder why there is an epidemic of obesity in this country. "I'm lugging it, oops, I mean "I'm loving it"..

It's hard to eat at any fast food hamburger joint for less than $10 bucks for a hamburger, fry and drink anymore.

I sort of agree with that. the people willing to spend the loot are usually CAR people before "vw" people and have a clue that a NOS center console for a KR Shelby is going to be 2K. just like a guy I know doing a resto on a 1 of 1 mustang who paid 10....yes...10,000.00 for date coded take off tires for a 67 Shelby that were found in a basement of another mustang guy back in the day.

like anything in life, you have to pay to play.

I just paid 450M for a piece of canvas...I'm going to fry it and eat it to see what Davinci tasted like. Am I in the right forum for that?
