My passenger side wheel arch closing is badly damaged so I purchased a replacement from vwheritage. I’m new to welding so I’m not sure how to tackle this. Anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions?

I don’t have a picture of the other side of the damage but it’s a little higher then the battery tray lip shown in the first pic.

You've got pretty much all of the original metal there. Many of us would likely try to straighten the original metal. Its in about as forgiving of a spot as you can ask for to get at it with hammers and dollies. If not, then a wire wheel on an angle grinder will strip the paint and seam sealer from the overlaps of the parts and the spot welds will be highlighted. Drill out the spot welds and separate the parts from each other. Use a chisel ended putty knife to help separate the parts. Its tough to always get every bit of the welds.

I wouldn't try and save that mangled mess...

cut and fit the new one...not really anything else to tell you really. that panel is part of the wheel tub. it intersects with the battery tray along a spot welded section where the flange for the battery tray is.

measure once cut twice Very Happy

I haven't cleaned the wheel well area yet but do you know if I can see the spot welds from that side? I'm trying to imagine how its attached so I can have a better plan of attack. I also have to figure out how to measure it to cut it properly but because it's so mangled that is a little more difficult.

Also, the piece came primed, will I need to remove the primer for where I'll be welding? Or do these type of pieces typically come with weldable primer?

pull the rear wheel, you'll see the spot welds when you clean it.

if it's E coat, just clean around where you're going to weld. if it's some shitty 'whatever we have' kind of stuff, I would strip it and use real stuff

I agree. Just put fresh metal in there.
