Hello all! This syncro popped up on craigslist that is about 2 hours away from me. There is noticeable seam rust and he claims that the trans needs rebuilding. I emailed him asking him what exactly the transmission needs, so i'll updated once i hear back. But at $3700, isnt this a good deal regardless? I figured i may ask him if he's interested in a trade for my 2001 vw golf + cash, OR if he'd take a flat $3000 for it.

Let me know what you guys think!

I saw that one on craigslist also. I do not think it is terribly over priced but it really depends on what is wrong with the trans. On the high end it could cost you 3k to have it rebuilt if enough is wrong with it.

I'd want to crawl under it and see the amount of rust damage before I went firm on any offer.

Ya the rust will be the biggest deciding factor for me. As for the trans, if I offer a trade for the golf + another 2k on top of that I pretty much have my trans rebuild paid, or a large chunk of it. Still waiting to hear back from him however. I'll update when i hear back/go look at it.

I saw a red one for $1800 in Minneapolis a few weeks ago. Wonder if this is the same one. That one listed a 2wd rear transaxle but still had the front transaxle.
There can't be two red tintip Syncros there with transmission problems. Wonder if someone bought and is reselling or the original owner got a lot of hits at $1800!

Same one, he bought it for $1500 a half hour before my friend got there and re listed it for $3700.

The original ad said a 2wd trans was installed

Knowing what he paid and knowing there is no Syncro trans.....you make the call,

Needs $7k in body work and a $4k trans.

Good deal for $1500

This is why i posted a thread on here, because nothing falls through the cracks! Thanks for the response guys. Without a syncro trans, this one is really not worth the price he's asking.

Yep, that's a 2WD trans and the drive shaft is missing. The old trans and drive shaft are long lost, the current seller doesn't have them (unless they're parts from some other van)

Original seller said it hasn't been driven much and mentioned things like making sure the hoses are good, etc. I only got this stuff via email and over the phone.

Bummer, that's a Syncro in trouble for sure. Making it a real Syncro again would cost as much as finding a nice one. One real kicker is you wouldn't know of any problems with the front axles/diff/VC until you'd spent $4k on a Syncro trans, and then you might be looking at another $2k to repair the front. So, bummer it will live out its life as a botched Frankenmobile.

Capitalism at it's finest. I hope he is stuck with it forever. There is an ass for every seat though. You don't want to be one on this syncro.

That's about where i would be. I would consider it a parts car or donor for a clean body though. With the investment of a new tranny you are looking at complete running car prices.

Wow... That guy sounds like the utopia of car / bus salesman... or at least a guy in the circus..

Good luck to the buyer if there is one.
