199254 miles on the van and 93 hours on the engine, let's see if this one can hold up to the northeast salt.

Depending on the grade of Stainless, a salt spray that hits a very hot object will certainly turn that coupling to mush real quickly. Maybe wrap it with header tape to keep the salt from penetrating the loose weave and packing the internal ribbed space. I feel that is bound to happen again.

Though its a somewhat "apples to oranges" comparison, the outside of the bushing on my ABA NA engine still looks ok after at least 10K miles. But then its located higher (closer to manifold) than the bushing you show. But only 3 months and 3000 miles on the bushing you show? I agree. It shouldnt be failing so soon.

I have a feeling it is too. A lot of cars have flex sections like this on the very bottom of the car, Audi for example. They are right before the catalysts. These cars are only a about 6 inches off the ground and get this part dragged through salt and slush for about 10 years before they go bad. I think it was just inferior metal used on the mesh part of this one.

Andrew - your van still alive and killin it on the roads? Forgo to ask - did you have to cut the crossmember at all to mount the Audi 5 speed (I believe you do for the Subi covnersions). Oh and when can you do this to my van? Razz

Thanks! Learning woodworking was my Covid project. I started in February '20 with little wooden boxes and worked my way up to building the boat. Just got it in the water for the first time this past weekend.
It was a happy surprise to find that it fits inside the Vanagon.
