Does that one require a cell sim card as well?

I did notice this :

The on-line web page tracking software has one month free trial, after that it is about 10USD per year.

Ten bucks a year sounds pretty good to me. Not sure about the SIM card but both my Koodo and AT&T SIM cards cost $10.00 each to buy - not a biggie.

I've emailed the maker for clarification.

Yes it should require it. I saw the $20 more expensive one came with the free software though. The more expensive one also has a battery which could come in handy if it goes to a chop shop and they pull the battery for some reason?

Not sure if I would like one that has to be armed though, I would rather it on all the time and will send data when I request it. The kill option could be cool though. I could wire it in to one of my diesel ECU fuses so it will just idle and barely run. That way they could at least move it over to the side of the road or something and not over rev the TDI!

The one I posted has a battery built in. I think the remote is to set the alarm function of the system.

And the "Over speed Warning" will surely come in handy! Smile

So does the microphone pickup and record what's said inside? Doesn't seem to be much info on that one. Would make sense if it had a SD card installed.

I wonder if this would be enough to make them think twice?

Tons of options out there for GPS tracking stickers...

Or maybe we should just customize our own with some sort of vanagon mafia logo...

Damn, I like the sticker. Anybody in the lower mainland/PNW want to split a sheet 2 and 2?

This one seems the ticket. Self contained power and no monthly fees. Now all we need is a testimonial.

How much is it though after the 3 years of software/whatever is up? Do you have to buy a new one? Will it end up being $100 a year for as long as you own it?

Both of the ones from new egg are available on amazon for cheaper.

This is the top selling device in GPS vehicle trackers on amazon. Sounds like it works from the reviews.

This one is interesting: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Time-Micro-GPS-Tracker/dp/B008YHQX6Q/ref=pd_sbs_e_57#productDetails
I asked the question is the $30 yearly or lifetime ans whether is requires a SIM card, I'll let you know if/when I hear back. Downside is it isn't hard wired into van. No reviews yet either...

Probably not unless you want to violated federal wiretapping laws.

That's why there never is audio on security cams.

I didn't notice if this brand was already mentioned, but these are in stock at my local motorcycle shop. So they are most likely available at others.
Comes with 1 year subscription, Not sure of cost $ for additional years

Kryptonite RealTime GPS - $395.95

It would take time to amortize the high initial cost, but most people seem to keep their vans for a long time. The first year would cost you $33.00 per month, but every month after that would only be $3.25 per month. Or, if you look at it a different way, if you kept the unit for 3 years, it would cost you $$13.17 per month or $9.20 per month for 5 years. (Hope my math is right!)

Ok this one is a no go for me $29.99 per month for service.

Personally I would rather pay a high initial cost and less after that. The device is always transferable to something else, so keep it cheap for the rest of it's life.

Not to derail the conversation but wouldn't it be cheaper and possibly better to just have a hidden fuel pump cutoff switch? Then the thief wouldn't be able to move the car, you wouldn't have to chase it down (with that dubious legality) and there is no monthly fee.

Fuel pump relays are low amp so the switch doesn't have to be a huge honking one, and you could hide it anywhere.
