Do these sim cards notify you via text or whatever that your rig is being touched, moved? Or is it an after the fact, means of allowing you to track(locate) your rig? _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.

You'd need to read the specs for the actual unit you have in mind.
Many of them do have a motion sensor alert and almost all have a geofence option. _________________ Dave O

I expect to receive a tk419 on 23th Nov, paid a bit extra for faster shipping.
Currently I have a tk103 (2G GSM only) installed. It is configured with fuel pump disconnect and starter inhibitor. Both of those features are failsafe in that if the the tk103 is disconnected normal operation is restored. Both are enabled if the van is outside the virtual fence location and the speed exceeds 10mph. They work in conjunction with an inexpensive Crimestopper alarm.
Because our van has been stolen once already, and recovered three weeks later, I am
a bit paranoid and also have a Spot Trace installed. Both are powered by the starting and house batteries via largqqish diodes and a small 4ah LFP battery. Overkill, maybe? I am a belt and suspenders man. _________________ Schau in das Buch |

Here's a new tracking product built by a Vanagon owner. 4G, gps tracker, remote kill switch via cell service (if I read it correctly)...

Thank you JIm. I promise I will not be annoying on this thread with a bunch of advertisements, but I have just released Van Tracker, a remote automatic kill switch + tracker + movement detector specifically designed for Vanagon.
The website is www.thevantracker.com and video playlist is below. The 2nd video is a little dense but covers everything VT can do. The 3rd and 4th videos are demos and are probably easier to digest

The documentation is here:

And a whole thread on it is here (to avoid hijacking this thread):

Just wanted to post my experience with finding a solution for this problem.
I previously had a Spot Trace and wasn’t very impressed with the interface or the increase in fees. So I cancelled that while the van was stored during the winter and hunted for another option. The satellite option was previously the best in my opinion bc of going to remote areas that might not have cell reception, but then figured the chances of whoever stole the van not going somewhere where there’s cell reception was unlikely.
Thought about something like bouncie that plugs into the OBD plug on our 2.5L Subaru conversion but that didn’t seem great either.
Then I came across the idea of using an old mobile phone with google maps location sharing. All I needed was a cheap data plan. Then the stars aligned and I learned that T-Mobile does these add a free line promos every once in a while and as luck would have it they ran one at the beginning of this year. So now that I’ve confirmed it’s legit and works I rigged an old smart phone in a hidden place in the van powered by a fuse tap into the auxiliary battery. And it’s working like a charm.
So if you have 1. T mobile 2. An old smart phone and 3. An auxiliary battery setup you’ve got a free tracking system. |

Honestly it's not a bad setup. I've wanted to use an old phone as a free dashcam, and what I found was there are several apps for exactly that.
You should try to find an app that will do geofencing and send you a text message or some other notification in the event that someone steals the van. I wouldn't be surprised if there's an app like that out there. I’m wondering how well the new Apple Airtags would work. If I understand correctly if they come near an iPhone the location can be tracked. Granted, not everyone has an iPhone but there are plenty around. For $29 it might be worth a little experimentation. |

The user base of Apple seems to make these devices more promising than smaller competitors. |
