|
|
Hi guys, installing some seat belts on my 71 bus middle seat finally. I noticed the floor bolt holes have a few threads in them so I don't want to pop a through bolt in or chance stripping them.
Can anyone please tell me quickly what thread size and length to use? Maybe I can order online or just pick up at hardware store. Thanks. |

I really have no idea but would be totally surprised if it was different threads than all the other seat belt fasteners. 7/16 NF and grade 8. Ace has them. _________________ 71 Superbug

So the seat belt bolts are not metric? Anyone know the size of the bolt that holds the rear seat belt mount to the gas tank tray? _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

Those bolts are no doubt metric. either 10mm x 1.0 1.25 or 1.50. the reason the seat belt bolts are SAE is because that is the United States federal standard for those bolts. The standard applied to all vehicles sold in the USA |

7/16-20 thread is so close to M11x1.25 as to be completely interchangeable for all practical purposes. Current US seat belt regs
mandate 7/16-20UNF, 1/2-13UNC, or EQUIVALENT METRIC SIZE for seat belt attachment hardware (49 CFR art. 571.209). Now
maybe things were different forty years ago, but I doubt it. I also doubt any manufacturer in a metric-system country would
use the peculiar "inch" system for its bolts unless it had to. I say the seat belt bolts in VW's are M11x1.25. Of course, it's not
a common metric size and probably hard to find, and 7/16-20 will work just as well. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Good info on the bolt sizes - thanks!
How about the "washer" that sits underneath the seat belt bracket? Microfiche lists it as a "seal" - would it be metal or rubber? #6 in the diagram

Those "washers" are nylon, or a similar plastic. Intended to isolate the swiveling bracket at the end of
the belt. You could probably find a suitable size at a good hardware store, mcmaster.com, etc. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Well, I just looked at what my bus has, and theres a heavy metal washer 15 mm ID x 28.5 mm OD x 3.5 mm thick under the shoulder on the
seat belt bolts, and on each side of the swivel bracket there's a "nylon" washer 14 mm ID x 22 mm OD x 1.5 mm thick. There's no
seat belt parts whatever listed in the VW bus parts manual I have, so I don't know whether any of it is stock or not. The belts are
definitely stock. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Usually it's a thinnish vinyl washer against the floor on solid mounted belts, and it really is a seal since the other end of that hole is outside against the splashy road. The swivel belts use more hardware. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Picked up some bolts and washers from the local hardware store yesterday. Worked well on my middle row seat belts. Less than $8 for the lot.
