NICE!!!
There isn't a "bolt pattern" on the vanagon sender, it simply is held in place by putting it in and giving it a quarter turn compressing an O ring under a tapered sleeve. |
Thanks for the info. We are working on different capacitors and it’s just a matter of finding the right one. It will be posted here for sharing the info.

Nice! Where are you going to put the smaller gauges? |
I currently have some VDO gauges under the stereo area. They will be replace with the new gauges.

Very cool and your van held together at close to 100 MPH! (158Km/h) Congats! |
Had the van up to 90mph one time on my way to las Vegas. Little scary even for a guy that use to drive the autobahn to work for years.

This is exactly what I was thinking about doing...Glad you were able to see it through to completion! Speedhut in UT are nice folks. I called them about a month ago asking about their gauges...I'll be using this write up for sure when I pull the trigger. WELL DONE! |
If you do use there gauges wiring them up is easy, not much to them at all. Its the foil thats the problem. I guess if you really wanted to, you could leave the foil back there and tap into the wiring harness that plugs into the cluster for signals and power. I almost went that route, but i wanted the water light and a clean cluster. It could be done though.

awesome upgrade and well documented.
I looked at the website for the gauges quickly. I would assume the gauge has an internal GPS receiver based on the price. Correct? |
There is an external magnetized GPS. I have it right in front of the cluster near the window. Can’t tell it’s there are all. The GPS looks the same as a Sirius receiver. Small and black. |

Anyone know about a small box that was used on Fords to regulate the fuel gauge? I may be able to get one, but I don’t know anything about it or if it would work. |

man that's really cool.
I want a pair of LED's above the clock for left/right blinkers.
and I don't want the clock.
doesn't speedhut have a tach with additional small gauges in it too ? |

GPS speedo...?
So, umm, what happens when you're going through a tunnel? Or an "urban canyon"? Or under trees...? Or any of the multiplicity of situations where GPS loses signal?
Does it have some kind of signal strength/number of satellites display?
How long does it take to get a fix when you first start up? _________________ Adrian

I don't know, interesting point though.
I did call speedhut to see if there is any way to integrate some kind of GPS pinger function that could be tracked by a cell phone when we had several stolen van threads pop up. adding that function would be super sweet I think.
aside from that I like the idea of getting rid of the speedo cable bump on the grease cap.
now I want a spare instrument pod to modify. maybe Oceans electronics buddy can work up a kit of some kind to wire these things up.
seems like the instrument cluster North Westy was working on might be using these gauges, they looked similar. |

"GPS" just means it receives signals. No more than that. There's nothing to ping back to on the GPS satellites, and nothing in the receiver that could ping back anyway. "GPS trackers" have a cell phone effectively taped to them to do that side of the communication. The "GPS" bit, as with a satnav, just tells the rest of it where it is. _________________ Adrian

That was my concern also, but so far it hasn’t been an issue. One time I whent under a large bridge and noticed the speedo stayed in place for a split second. Canyons and trees havent cut the signal at all even in Mexico's wine country. Im sure if im go through a tunnel the speedo reading will just stay in place until it reaches the end. No biggie to me because it has been really nice to have so far.
The startup has been about 30-45 seconds if the van has not been started in more than 4 hours. It’s always been on before I start moving. If under 4 hours the startup is instantaneous.

You can always send him an email about it. I did the psycial part of installing the gauges into the instriment pannel, but I bet he could do it with no problems. I have to admit it cost me north of $800 to get this cluster right. Not easy mod at all, but the best one I have done so far and it was well worth the time, money and frustration. Im stoked on the little guy... _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

My guess (I'm not a mechanic, just a tinker-er) is that it would work the same way as mine. Tach signal into the tach and the just program the revolutions. Subaru 2.2 setting was 2.
The whole cluster has been great over time. No glitches or down sides to report. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

Ocean,
Do you find the shift light at all distracting? Would you keep it or get one without the shift light?

No, but its a little on the bright side. The lights are all programable so you could just leave them off if you wanted. Im using it as a speed indicator by having them set to 3,9000 rpm (76 mph in forth gear). Helps my MPG by controlling my lead foot. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

This is a very good mod. specially since my 2wd syncro does not have
a speedo. Exactly what I need! I just purchase the 80 MPH, with tach
setup off the web page. Can't wait until its here. My 2wd syncro will be complete again, and have the latest technology without mickey mousing things.
As for the fuel gauge, the signal you get from the sending unit is exactly
what you are seeing. Basicly they bounce all over the place. Most fuel gauges deal with this at the gauge. If you understand how a fuel gauge works it all makes sense. The factory gauges work as a heater. This averages the feedback from the fuel sender. What your going to do is not
going to be easy or cheap, that why the factory did it the way they did. |
