PostPosted: Thu Sep 12, 2013 10:34 pm    Post subject: dashboard instruments and switches Reply with quote

I have a 74'.

On the left side of the dash, I have a RPM gauge with two toggle switches above it. What are these switches for? When I switch the left one....nothing. When I switch the right one, the small yellow dash light lights up.

Can someone insight this newbie

I have looked at pictures but could not find the instrument configuration that I have(stock)

Thanks for all your help

Post a picture in the gallery if you can. The tachometer and switches definitely aren't stock. And what small yellow dash light do you mean? Take a picture of that too.

The two switches are on the far left of the dash above the tach. The right switch turns on a yellow dash light on the far right of the dash above the fuel gauge. Not stock?

The "yellow dash light" is the master cylinder brake warning light, but under no circumstances that should be switch activated... Your fuse bank is also where the ashtray should go. Here is a picture of my stock '73. It should only have the light switch, gasoline heater control, Speedometer, “accessory” 12V receptacle, emergency flashers, brake warning light.

And yours should not have the Gasoline Heater, it's kind of rare on a '74

It doesn't have a heater, but I have yet to see this dashboard configuration yet in the gallery. Also, I can't read those illuminated little rectangle lens. They light up at start.

Your not going to find them because it's a PO (Previous Owner) install. Just a guess here but I bet the retangular lights are for your Oil, Gen, high beam, or turn signal indicators.

You may want to sort out which light goes to what. Turn and high bean should be easy enough. Easist way to figure out which goes to the oil pressure would be to turn the ignition to on (but don't start car). Then go to the back of the car and pull the wire off the oil pressure switch. Oil pressure light should go out. Gen light will remain on.

Not factory! Chase the wires. May have had fog/driving lights at one time. I wire mine with a dash indicator light too. The wires will be very un-factory, which should make them easy to follow.
