Hi guys..

I have installed a 010 in my 2109 engine, switched from a chinese "009" with no retard on cylinder 2.
If the 010 has the retard on cylinder 3 i would suspect that the rotor need to be in the correct position at all the cylinders.

So the question is, where is the rotor pointing when cylinder 1 fires?

At (or about depending on timing) the small scribe line in the distributor body.

Like the one at the 4 o'clock position in this pic (courtesy of Glenn Ring)

Think That mark/notch will mean diddly as a point for #1.

The dist drive gear has 12 teeth (ea being 30 degrees) so there are that many possible points for #1.

Change from a Vac dist to a mechanical and the timing will change 90 degrees to the left or right...depending on which change is being made.

The crank pully at TDC will have the rotor at #1 or #3 PERIOD.

(VW mechanic)

The mark means diddly if you orient the body incorrectly. Yes, it will run with the distributor body in any orientation, but the "correct" position is cylinder #1 TDC rotor pointing to the notch in the housing. Of course the distributor drive has to be installed by the book in order for this to look correct.

There is a tool made just for pulling the dist drive.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Distributor-Drive-Puller-T...mp;vxp=mtr

I had one years ago. I think I used it a couple of times to correct rookie (customer) mistakes. As with all tools if you don't use them they seem to vaporize over time.

Or just flip the drive tang on the bottom of the distributor the other way around.

Was looking at The distributor today, and it actually needs to go 90 degrees counter clockwise. But could someone tell med how the bloody special tool works?
