I'm a fan of Greek food - gyros in particular. And I like 'em zaftig.
Two of my favorite places are Zorba and Gyro Palace.
Zorba is (was on South Oyster Bay Rd in Hicksville) for about 50 years. My wife and I went there to have dinner a few weeks ago to find them OOB, and I don't know why. This place was a staple for the neighborhood for decades.
My other favorite place for gyros is Gyro Palace on Sunrise Highway in Merrick. Big, tasty gyros. 'Nuff said. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? SNAPS American Bistro on Wantagh Ave in Wantagh. Killer burgers and accoutrements. http://www.snapsrestaurant.com/menu.php
Tullulah's on 4th Ave in Bay Shore. Tapis menu. Too much good stuff to describe. Here's the menu: http://www.tullulahs.com/menus/ _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? The Market Italian Village, Summit St, Columbus, Ohio.
We had stayed in the German Village just outside of Columbus this past winter. One day we were so busy that we had forgotten to do research on where to have dinner. Just around the corner was this restaurant.
Let me just say that everything was phenomenal. Super fresh and flavorful, and dozens of craft-brewed beers (I had Clown Shoes). They have multiple menus. Here is the evening menu, which we experienced some of: https://www.themarketiv.com/evening/ _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Somerville MA (Boston)
Right off the highway on Washington St.
Buddy's
My god what a throwback. No tables, 360* of counter seating. Menu is on paper plates hanging above the line, which you are sitting in front of.
Foods good, fast, cheap.
This place is running on all cylinders!

Oh Ken, if you're ever up in MA you must holler at me. I can take you on tour! In fact, how close is MA to being #1 for quantity on your list? I think I could get us there in one post. I love interesting, greasy spoon, mom-and-pop diners! _________________ 1971 STD BEETLE- DD-1st car, 1st love. keepin' it stock! 1600DP, Solex 34-3 Mexi Bosch SVDA Dist NOW w/POINTS

oK, post #1 in the "Catching up to Cali" series. We'll start with my old stompin grounds, where I grew up in Bristol/Plymouth Counties, MA. I'll put a couple places in each post, so I don't have to post 67 times.
Taunton: Star Drive In (https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-star-drive-in-east-taunton), one of those old school spots where they used to send girls on roller skates out to you. Now they just call your name on the loudspeaker. Bonus for their classic car cruise nights and killer seafood, also about to be real close to a casino being built:
Also Taunton: This is a two-for of old-school American Garbage joints. Colonial Donut and China Kitchen. They operate separate hours. The donut shop is THE BEST DONUTS within 50 miles, I don't care what anyone says. They are those thick cake type that have like 1/4 inch of glaze on em, they are good enough for desert 3 days later. Old school donut shop setup inside, row after row of counter, and only open for the breakfast/early lunch crowd.
China Kitchen still sports the original wood paneling and Formica counter from the 70s inside, as well as their sign out front. Hole in the wall takeout place that has like 4 booths, and if you sit down to eat they bring you bread and a pot of tea. Chow Mein sandwiches recommended. Open late.
In neighboring Raynham: The Milk Bottle (https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-milk-bottle-restaurant-raynham). Breakfast place, also has classic car nights. The pic tells the story:
Last we go one town over to Middleboro. Classic stainless steel diner, Dave's Diner(https://www.yelp.com/biz/daves-diner-middleboro) . Place isn't all that old but it feels like it. Again, classic car nights. Bonus points cuz I used to work there in high school flippin burgers:

Places posted for Maine so far are downstate. I'm up in "The County" where you drive to, not through. Just about all we have are mom & pop joints, except for the "big city" of Presque Isle. Addresses are kind of pointless up here, these places are well known to the locals;
Lakeview Restaurant, 9 Lakeview Dr., St. Agatha, ME 04772 Popular destination, but not as easy to get to, thus an address. Gorgeous view of Long Lake and the St. John Valley. The rest are on main drags.
Burger Boy, Caribou (seasonal, good cruise stop)
Fredericks, Caribou
Irish Setter, Presque Isle
Riverside Inn, Presque Isle
Boondocks, Fort Fairfield
Al's Diner, Mars Hill
The Blue Moose, Monticello
The Elm Tree, Houlton
Grammy's Country Inn, Linneus (Houlton) (Whoopie pies as big as your head...)
And further south where addresses do matter;
Stewman's Lobster Pound, 35 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609
Nicky's Cruisin Diner, 957 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401 (On the road to the airport) Excellent cruise spot, as the name suggests.
That's by no means all of them, just where we've stopped to eat, and would recommend and/or definitely go back to. We've only been in Maine a couple years, much more to explore... |
