My name is Jimmy. I am 14 and I just got my first car. A 66 bug. It is not much to look at, but hopefully it will be by the time I am 16 and can drive it. My dad picked it up last Friday from Colorado and brought it home. It definitely needs alot of work. My dad says it will be good for me to learn. I am excited, but scared at the same time. My dad should be able to help guide me. He built a 66 for my sister a couple years ago and just finished one for himself. We are planning on building it with what my Dad calls an old school look. Here are some pictures.

This will be such a great project for you! We have a 1966 Beetle as well, and even though ours is "all together", there is always something to do. You'll get to learn a lot about cars, and spend some good quality time with your dad.

You're very lucky!

Love the way the 1966 Beetle's looked. My first Car too! Well if I don't count the Studebaker! If I only know all of the neat things about them they talk about here on the Samba back then!

I would suggest reading ALL the project and build threads on this site (not just 58-67) The oval forum build thread is a "how to " for body work...I watch TV with a laptop in my lap and during the commercials I mute the tv and read the build threads ; A LOT OF INFO...learn from others mistakes... I am currently building a sedan delivery out of a 66 that someone tore apart and never finished....I was 14,,,, in 1965 Shocked...Welcome to the samba ;.have fun with your "new toy" Very Happy

It's always fun the get them running first, I would be nice to go through the engine and put in some new bearings and 85.5 or 87 or 88 mm bolt on Pistons and cylinders, rebuild the heads or replace them, and clean and prime and paint the engine tins. Even paint parts of the Flywheel to keep it from rusting. The Engle W100 cam works nice in the single port engines. Seal the case with a good case sealer etc and it won't leak a drop of oil! OH, don't for get to clean out the heater boxes or get them boiled or something so your heat doesn't smell like motor oil! I seal the valve cover gaskets in with case seal but just on the cover side. Then when I adjust the valves I just clean the gasket with carb cleaner or break cleaner wipe them dry and re-use. Wipe any oil off the head too, for some reason dry gaskets seal better.

Hi Jimmy: Congrats on the project. I finished my '66 in about a year, usually working 4 hours a day after my full time job. I put about $4k in parts into it. It looked similar to yours but a little more trashed. I took pictures of just about each phase. You can find the photos in my albums on facebook. Just design a plan of attack and keep to it. Keep organized and keep all parts labeled and in a central location. Good luck. My son was 14 when I started the project and I was actually building it for him but he wasn't really interested at all and I got lucky because I drive it everyday now. It's not automatic, it's got no power windows or air conditioning and drives like a go-cart, and that's the fun of it. Take lots of photos and IM me anytime if you have any questions on how I did something. You'll learn so much from this that you could never learn in school.

Last night my dad and I pulled the body of the pan, only two broken bolts to remove. Now all we have to do is to strip the pan down to the base.

This is very cool. You may look at this and be like, cool, I get to build a car. What you don't realize is how much you are going to love this and miss this down the road.

Take the time, listen and just have fun with this!! Spend it with your dad and just talk about anything and everything while doing this project.

You BOTH are building dream and memories! Some day when you are older, you will look back and think, man that was such a special time.

When you are older - do it with your kids.

Great project, I'll follow along. You have some great support here.

Thanks to everyone for replies. I told my Dad Saturday after having trouble with a couple bolts that I couldn't do this for a living, but it is fun working on it with him. We got the pan stripped down Saturday. There is only one small hole in the battery tray that my Dad said we can easily repair so that was a good find.

Congrats on getting your first VW! Looks like you're off to a great start. My son and I are just finishing up a 61 beetle that we built for him over the past couple of years. It's been a lot of work, but the end result makes it all worth it. We're in Cedar Hills so we're just around the corner from you. Let us know if you need any help - we'd be glad to jump in.

Jimmy, you are one very lucky young man! I wasn't lucky enough to have a father teach me how to work on cars. I learned by screwing stuff up and then having to fix my own mistakes. Your father will be a wealth of information!

You may be intimidated by this project now but it will teach what not to do an how not to get frustrated. I remember back in the day when I broke a bolt off or couldn't get one out I was almost in the state of panic! No it just becomes a challenge on how to get the job done.

Most of all like others have said....cherish the time with such a cool father.....a VW guy!

My dad and I did the same thing when I was 14, only difference was that I had a 63 squareback. It was a great time. He used to let me hold wrenches and get tools for him when I was real little, I have pics of me sitting on the fender of a 64 Galaxie with a wrench when I was about 4. The memories are priceless. I still work with him on cars and we go to auto auctions, car shows, swap meets whatever we can find that involves cars. Experiences I had with him have driven me throughout the years now I'm doing the same with my son. Enjoy the time with him and have fun building that car. You'll like it so much more than any modern car you can buy and drive. Any asshole can buy a Honda or Kia.

Congrats Jimmy! I'll be watching this thread to see how you guys get along with the project- I'm building a 60 right now, and as I get a little farther into it, I hope that at least one of my sons will be able to help me with it. My oldest is 10 years younger than you. He's got a ways to go!!

You guys are really starting this project with great momentum- looks like it'll be back together in no time!
