Early euro ones were tempered windshields but US delivered cars are laminated glass, and tempered glass is harder to polish then laminated glass since laminated glass is annealed/raw. |
My 59 was not, my 60 was. Earliest code requirement I can find is American National Standard "Safety Code for Safety Glazing Materials for Glazing Motor Vehicles Operating on Land Highways," Z26.1-1966
My 57 bug was not laminated either. |

WOW Dave, the car looks beautiful. The interior bits really make it come alive, and closer to being finished. You've really made great progress on this one. It seems the more cars you do, the better you get. The more detail oriented too. Beautiful job. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The same face I see all the time when someone gets that moment to drive what they built. Classic.

Hi Folks
An update – I installed a new $100 fuel sender into the car and found that it didn’t work. I took it apart and had to lightly hone the inside of the cylinder before the float would move freely. But there remained a problem. It took some fiddling to discover that the original sender unit measures 90 ohms when empty and about 0 ohms when full. My new one records about 120 ohms empty and about 0 ohms when full. A linear relationship but with a different slope. The upshot is that it will indicate that the tank is empty when it’s not – perhaps not a bad thing.
I decided then that I want to rebuild the original unit. I dismantled it and it’s pretty cool the way they’ve built it, with small winders to set the tension in the wires. I found a source for the thin wires and when it comes I’ll tackle the rebuild. In the meantime, I have a request. Here is a picture of the top of my unit, and you can see the date stamp and all. Cool. What I don’t know is what kind of connector was used. There was just a kluge job with wire held with epoxy. Can someone send me a photo of the original top so that I can see what kind of connector was used – or perhaps it is the same male spade as on the current models.
Thanks.
