I'm getting pulled over more in my VW than any other car I have driven. We've all been there. Red and Blue lights flashing behind you. Then you think to yourself, "What am I getting pulled over for?"
Let's hear some stories! I bet there are some pretty good ones out there!
I laugh every time I get pulled over because of the decals on my mirrors...

I'll start off with a story...
When I finally got my VW on the road after building it for 5 months, I was so happy! Everything new, and freshly lowered. But then I see the lights behind me. I pull over and the cop gets out of his car with a worried look on his face. He tells me
"Kid! are you aware that your back wheels are about to fall off?! This vehicle is unsafe!"
Officer, you are incorrect, that is called camber. That's what happens when you lower old VW's! Look it up on Google! |

In the past couple years, I've been pulled over and received 2 tickets from the same state patrolman.
1. "Modified exhaust" - dropped in court by the judge due to the law clearly stating that there are no restrictions on cars over 25 years old. . .
2. "Collector plate violation" - dropped in court by the judge due to the law having so many holes in it that you can literally drive your car through them.
Me-2; cop-0, nada, nothing. _________________ Regards,

That's a good one. Modified exhaust is going to get a lot of hits. Around my neck of the woods the cops call it "Disturbing the peace"
I got pulled over at a Casino parking structure for setting off too many car alarms. They told me to leave and never come back... |

Long hair and DWVW (Driving While in a VW), in the '70s. Oh, there was always an excuse... tail lights, license plate light, illegal foglamps. Always bogus. But then I looked the part (handpainted sunburst on the hood, rainbow stickers, etc):
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1114946.jpg
I repainted the car pronto when I got tired of this.
My ex-wife got pulled over supposedly for bald tires and driving only 45mph on a freeway. This was at night, on the freeway. No way a cop could tell the tread depth! The real reason was that it was after 11 PM and she was only 5'0" and probably looked underage (they actually enforced curfew laws back then). She got off with a warning once they saw her birthday on her license.
Funny think was, they pulled her over after following her up a long hill. That explains the 45mph; it was a worn out 36HP motor. Good thing. Going downhill, that same oil-burning, gutted-header-equipped motor shot blue-yellow flames out about two feet when overrunning going down hill. I think they would have cited her for that... |

Wow, where to begin. I think the worst was when I was 17. The notch was a bare shell I mean bare. It was primer black. I just got the stroker motor together with the close box. I had to test drive I! I twisted a few wires together and my friend jumped in sitting on a milk crate. It was about 11 at night. I did some hot laps around the neighborhood then decided to open it up on a Main Street. I picked one with no cross traffic and went for it. A cop going the other way saw me doing about 100mph and swiftly did a u turn. By the time he caught me I was miles down the road. He was yelling at the top if his lungs with spit flying out of his mouth about how I could go to jail and I would never see my car again. He said he was so disgusted he did not know what to do with me. He said get this piece of shit off the road before I order it to be crushed. I did not wait a second. I bailed home without a single ticket...
Oh but there was a plethora of tickets to come! |

Good one! Similar event happened to me! My first car was an aircooled porsche 912 And one night me and a friend wanted to see how fast we could take it in a quarter mile. there is a street in my town that has a speed radar sign exactly a quarter mile down the road from a stop sign. Dropped the clutch and went trough all the gears. Passed the sign in 5th gear blinking 90mph. Just my luck, a cop just turned onto the street and saw the sign blinking 90 with me speeding away. Now to try to talk my way out of this one... |

I was pulled over for speeding. Ended up getting a warning for the speeding and a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. I still haven't gotten around to bolting them in. The ticket was thrown out in court, since seat belts aren't required in cars older than 1972 here in WI. _________________ Kenneth

Several for too low, several for modified exhaust and of course speeding.
190 horse power with a close ratio gear box and a 2300# pressure plate my car would chirp 4th if you clutched it at 45. it left burnouts in front of all my friends houses as good as a lot of the v8 cars. A teenage kid in a low seven second eighth mile car is asking for trouble... |

Back in '83, got pulled over for pulling a notch with another notch from Upland to LA with a home made tow hitch. Got away with a warning. Later on, got puled over for using 16 gauge wire to hold my rear license plate. (it was hanging from the holes in the trunk for the license light) _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

I haven't been pulled over in my square yet, but I have come back to the car to see a piece of paper under the wiper. I was angry and had no idea how I could have gotten a parking ticket, but it turned out to be a note from a guy telling me about the square he used to own and asking if mine was for sale. |

Got pulled over twice on suspicion of my squareback being "Stolen"
the first time, the Cop tells me up front "Did you steal this car? I don't see too many young people driving nice old cars around here."
Two weeks later I get pulled over and a cop tells me there's a White 96 VW Wagon that has been stolen in the area, and his positive it is my car.
"Officer, this is a white 69 VW Wagon and it's not stolen. |

I got off of work one day and was walking to my car in the rain when I notice a piece of paper under my wiper. I was nervous because I thought the rain might have smeared the ink and make the ticket un readable. I came to find out it was just a not someone left reguarding my car.

I had just turned 16 and we were visiting my Grandma in Seattle. My Uncle Ed rolled out his Yamaha 250 and told me to take it for a ride! I wandered around Bothell until I got pulled over/written up for 'passing on the right'. I showed the ticket to my Dad before we went home to Redding the next morning. He says 'oh well we won't worry about it back in CA'. About 4 months later we had to appear at the Shasta County Probation office. I got 10 points on my driving record for 10 years for 'failure to appear' and it cost me extra money on my car insurance! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

That's great to hear! I've been somewhat paranoid about that with my 63, which has a 1963 WA plate on it. I use the car as a daily driver, but I carry around a printed out copy of the relevant RCW in the event that a cop tries to hassle me about it. "Yes, I know it looks like I'm driving to work, but what you see is actually me testing the, uh, new carburetor."
I did get pulled over once because of that plate, but that can of worms remained unopened, thankfully. Some Snohomish County sheriff ran my plate (for no reason, apparently) and it came up stolen. Someone with a mid-40s Cadillac had reported a stolen license plate, which doesn't even make any sense, because in WA you can only register a car with a vintage plate if it matches the year of manufacture for the car. After much hassle and stalling on my part (cop wanted to take the plate; I wanted to talk to the people who supposedly had it stolen from them), the report was withdrawn and I got to keep the plate. Victory! |
