I am at a loss not knowing what the preheat tube that is under the breast plate looks like that extends through the right front air deflector. I need one and do not know what I am lkoking for. I don't know if it is an elbow or straight piece. I do know it fastens via the right muffler stud. I picture of the item would really help in my search. It may be a one or two year only production piece. Please help. TIA |

Everett just beat me to it with some great pics, but here's mine:
I am finishing a rebuild of the motor in my '66. The preheat pipe and hose was missing when I bought the car, so I scrounged one up, cleaned it, and painted it. As you can see, it is a straight pipe cut at about a 40 degree angle, and with a simple bracket welded on to mount under the lower exhaust nut. Left side, as Everett noted. |

Any reason the straight tube couldn’t/shouldn’t be mounted on the passenger side (aside from not being stock anyway)? Or, if I want the preheat tube on the passenger side would I need the other piece with the bend that is in Everett’s 67 only pic? _________________ '58 Kombi |

I guess you could do that but you'd need a '67 one year only oil bath air filter. _________________ '66 Beetle

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I meant is there any reason I couldn’t put it ONLY on the passenger side. I purchased a tin with no preheat hole, (rear tin was missing when I bought the bus) so I was thinking of drilling one on the passenger side rather than cross in front of the pulley. The air cleaner is mounted off to the right already. However, it looks like maybe (based on Everett’s pic) that the tube for the passenger side is bent for some reason. _________________ '58 Kombi |

You could just do the passenger side if you only have one pre-heat connection.
The right side one is longer though, it's on the bottom in this pic
I don't think you can shift the left-side pipe to the right side without re-welding the bracket and even then I'm not sure it would line up right since it's shorter.
You could just stuff the hose into the sled tin under the cylinders though - the correct tin and pipe is nicer of course
Left side hose stuffed in with no pipe
