Owned van for a couple of years, perfect for what I need, beach cruiser, surf/work. Off and on the shifter has gotten jammed, stuck in second, I could slide underneath release the jam at the tranny/rod and no problem for months. A couple days ago it happened again, but when I released manually, it would not go into 1st. Pulled over to a whirring sound, shut down and crawled underneath again, released again and made it home. Ive pulled the front shifter box off, checked the shifter ball, cleaned that up and and replaced the shift lever at the transmission. When rod was off I manually tried all gears, still no reverse and 1st is where reverse seems like it should be. what next? I am concerned there is internal damage, any ideas? |

Bushing is showing around gear selector shaft at tranny. How much should show, I have no idea. Or maybe that is the oil seal? can these slide out and cause shaft to not penetrate enough to catch reverse? How much should be showing? |

If you can take a photo of the shaft/seal area we might be able to tell you if it looks ok.

Yes, it looks right. See Bentley pages 35.18 and 35.19.
It shows that shaft bushing and seal protruding from the case like in your photo.

OK, that helps, so now I can move on to the base adjustment/spline twist. the PO put phillip head screws on the base plate. that doesn't appear to be stock, and they are not budging. I need to get under there again and see if there are nuts, I sure hope so. I will update later. Thanks again. |

Just be sure to mark the shaft positions first at the splined friction coupling. The female side has a split and I mark where it lines up with the male side. Then loosen the clamp bolt and turn the front section so it moves the hand lever a little toward the passenger side. I think a guy on the other forum you were posting on gave you the wrong direction to turn the front shaft. I start off by clamping 2 pairs of vise grips tightly to the 2 shafts, hanging down at the same angle. Then use them to hold the rear shaft and very slightly turn the front shaft. You can leave the vise grips on there while you tighten the clamp and try a test. It is easy to adjust it too far and then you gain reverse but lose 3 and 4. A little trial and error is normal.

well, the diesel guys are starting to lean toward some internal breakage, mostly because I cant find reverse by hand, and the bushing looks right, so I guess I will sleep or not on it. thanks again |

Stock 1.6 diesel? I have the original 4 speed that came out of my diesel when I did the conversion. Less than 100K on it and it was shifting fine, but the gearing was way to short for my TDI. I see you are in Hawaii, but if you determine you need a replacement, while it would cost a fortune to ship from Florida, PM me if you'd like to make an offer at some point.
For sure, with the shift linkage disconnected and the engine off, you should be able to find reverse and the 4 forward gears by shifting at the transmission. _________________ ☮️ |

Yes, stock 1.6l diesel. I'll hopefully be able to access something closer to home, but i do appreciate the offer. The dieselyahoo guys said that there is a front piece that is replaceable, without removing the transmission, my problem may be there. Hopefully can get this sussed out without too much drama, I do know right now, there is no going backwards. |

It was the spline adjustment, so minor too. It seems like it was more front to back than side to side. after work i got under there again, double vise grips two 13 mm wrenches fiddle go up/down fiddle/go up etc. all of a sudden it felt right, better than right and much more positive than the last two years of ownership. thanks much and ALOHA NUI |
