|
|
I put in a new accelerator cable yesterday and the result was AMAZING!
Must have been badly adjusted before because my power went way up. The kickdown on my automatic never worked until yesterday.
I raced around kike a teenager for about 15 min then let it sit for 3 hours. Started it up and drove for another 10 min and it started bogging down and sputtering. I barely made it home.
Did I mess up the throttle switch somehow? |

Adjust the linkage? I feel like thats the one bit thats dialed in perfectly. It shifts when it should and the power is a amazing.
If it was off would it give intermittent trouble like that? |

If the kickdown NEVER worked and now does....something has changed.
The autos and not my favorite, but I have plenty of experience with them as I drive Carats as an every day van.
I usually take all the linkage apart, clean it and reinstalled greased.
I have made adjustments while doing so.
The throttle body and throttle switch should be checked, cleaned and adjusted too. |

Coincidence?
That's where I'd look first.....fuel filter.

You know I did run it pretty low on gas a few days ago. When I did the fuel pump definitely started making unhappy sounds.
Filter is on my list anyway along with a new o2 sensor. |

Double checked the cable and linkage then went for a drive. Ran great for 10 min then started to conk after a big hill. Pulled over and unplugged the O2 sensor and it ran great after that.
Still think it might be the filter.
What are the odds that the O2 goes out when I am just about to replace it?
Do those odds go up if I hose it down with wd40 for a week in preparation of removal? |

Save the WD40 - it's NOT a penetrant. Here's your plan:
Heat the old sensor nice & hot (torch); melt candle wax on the hot
threads, bang on it with a hammer & start wrenching. Git 'er done!
Good luck with your troubleshooting... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

If disconnecting the O2 sensor made a difference that means the O2 is probably working correctly. You could have a misfire somewhere that your O2 sensor and ECU are reading the misfire as an overly lean condition and over enriching your mixture to the point the engine no longer runs well.
This could be caused by one or more bad plugs, bad plug wires, a bad injector or other. |

Its baaack.
Unplugging the sensor took just long enough for the van to catch its breath. Shut off the engine for a few min then you can drive for a few min.
Replaced fuel filter . No help there.
I am starting to think fuel pump or maybe cat.
What do you guys think? |
