BTT Wink

I thought it was time to bump this back to the first page as there seems there are a few Gerson pan question and more of his pans are being used these days

Speaking of bumps, this is a dead link now Sad

I have this, is it the same?

My lap top isn't wanting to open Adobe tonight, but you're right about Russ Wolfe's site being down. I guess his family decided that it didn't need to be up any more. But then I did mention the Blue Bentley having the seat track frame in it. It's a great loss about his site (and him), as I'd reference it every so often my self (especially the FI part).
I think Everett might have it here in the tool section (local manufacture), but I haven't gone looking for it.
On a plus note, I did work on 2 type 3s in the past week.
Very Happy

You can find a lot of his site on the waybackmachine:
https://web.archive.org/web/20150405111640/http://classicvw.org/

Sadly many of the photos share the same Xwinner dot com missing image filler that so many old threads on this site have.

Some of the dates the site was captured have more data than others.

Just in case anyone is doing this. The measurement between the holes on the outer edge of the pan is 51 3/4"

Very informative thread - thanks.

I have a donor pan and was hoping to transplant the whole one piece pan into my original tunnel and front and rear of my pan, There will be much drilling of spot welds and carefully splitting seams to get the donor out and in as a one piece replacement. Has anyone done this? What are the pitfalls?

My donor pan:

Keep in mind that the type 3 floor section (pan area) is all 1 piece, and the tunnel is spot welded to it. You're actually better off getting as many dimensions as you possibly can before doing any cutting or drilling, so you'll know where to line everything up. Also keep in mind that the pan to body holes on the outside edge might be off and need adjusting.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Bob. I aim to drill out all the spot welds and unpick this one piece pan from the tunnel and transplant it to my car. I'm borrowing a rotisserie to make life easier

I'm hoping it will all line up properly given it's a VW pan but I'll take your advice and make plenty of reference marks from tunnel to pan and other random measurements.

Cheers. Dave

Just the car port Giles - it is a bit fresh out there today but not bad if you dress appropriately. We're in Doncaster - about an hour north of Mount Eliza so not too far. I've just had a rotisserie delivered so hope to separate this pan into its component parts this weekend Smile

My brother in law is in Belgrave Heights Smile
Stick at it. Getting the paint on mine today has just renewed my enthusiasm. You need these milestones to keep you going - Or I do, anyway.

You can Sawzall them both out in 1 day if you leave 5% pedals/upper battery box at the front & rear.
Leave the 1/2" lip on the tunnel to weld the 'new' pans onto.

Thanks Mike. I'm looking to salvage the entire one piece pan from this donor to transplant into mine. I'll post pictures as I go.

Did you take any measurements ahead of time for pan bolts into the body along the sides to make sure the new panels lined up correctly?

Bolt them onto the body, while you weld them onto the chassis?

Following the guidance here. Makes a lot of sense once you start cutting and seeing how the sheet metal is put together.

You can cut the pans out with a grinder/sawzall & not bother with separating spot welds.
Cut at the tunnel lip & around the pedals & battery box & butt weld it together.
You can leave the body on the pan this way!
