Hey do you happen to remember the part number on the triangle piece that the rear valance attaches to? Can't seem to find it.
Thanks!

The top section of the boxed frame that runs from front to back had some dodgy areas so I cut it out and made patches. I was able to opsho, prime, and paint the inside of the frame too before I weld it up.
Received my tophats that go under the load bed. Cut away old and fitted these in place. Not welded yet. The quality of these panels is just amazing.
Now that the rear frame section was done, it was time to mount the triangle and get the apron lined up and happy gapped. Thats my new term. I might be losing my mind a little bit.
I had ordered a pair of triangles but later learned that Gerson only really makes the passenger side. This actually worked out great because my driver is not all that bad. So I stole the captive nuts since mine were no good.
Welded them on (you will see a small section of the triangle that is a little crusty that I later cut out. I'll use the gerson triangle to patch it.
I bolted the passenger triangle directly to the apron and it worked out perfect to get the triangle in the perfect spot. I tacked it, and then removed the apron to get some nice solid welds in that 13gauge steel.
Apron fits great! Also started fitting my engine trays to see how they oriented with the apron. I was excited to fit this apron as I purchased it several months ago for a steal.

Haha its a scary place. These guys know their stuff. Yeah the Type 4 build should be done in Feb which means I can install the motor and start camping, in theory. IF all goes as planned then the single cab can go back to front and center and get some loving.
I want to get the single cab into paint later this summer when the humidity drops. Its sitting in a safe place though there is some rust haze developing all over. My son thinks I should just leave it alone and put a motor in it. He could be right. _________________ Shadetree Westy

Ok let's do this! Just spent an afternoon unloading all of the stuff that's piled up in and on the single cab. Stole some gnarly tires from our Thing, stripped the rest of the glass, hooked it up to the tow bar and off to southern MD we go!
It's now at the blasters ready to be next. Back at it.
Here is what it looked like today, after a year and a half of outdoor storage, under my pavilion aka the Wagenhaus.
And here it is at the blasters:

AWESOME! Nice to see this back on the front burner! Lots of us patiently watching for progress on this old SC. What media will they be blasting the Bus with? Will they prime it right away or is that your chore?

Thanks for the welcome back guys. Feel like it's been so long.
The blaster will be using soda in some places and glass media in others.
I felt like a reset was needed due to rust haze that developed plus there's some areas I just can't get to with a wire wheel.. The blaster will not prime but he was cool enough to offer use of his blast booth while I do it.
I'm leaning towards epoxy primer instead of self etching since I have to bodywork panels with filler. I can bring my compressor and a paint gun if needed. My final paint will be DuPont Velvet Green so I need something that plays nice with that brand.
Thoughts/input? This is my first time having an entire vehicle blasted..
Is self etching the wrong primer since filler will still be required? _________________ Shadetree Westy

You have experience with all the nuances of the epoxy paint? If so it will buy you more time and you can fill over it.

Epoxy as the base will play well but most likely you will have something between the gloss and it.

You have experience with all the nuances of the residue from those mediums? If so, go for it in his booth but from experience you will be in for torture and frustration.

You have experience with self etching nusances? Self etching will be easier to reapply if necessary but won't protect as well from long term moisture during restoration.
Questions to my questions? |

Yes I have some experience, but not a lot. I used PPG Epoxy which is what I laid down on my oval about 5 years ago, but that was only just before laying down color, so not right after blasting like this. I'm not even sure if you can buy epoxy primer in rattle can. Or even if I should?

Yessir, for sure. I understand.

I have some experience but not a lot. I know with soda you need to wash the metal, and I know with media blasting you need to clean, sand and degrease. Thats about all I know. I've had panels blasted before plenty of times and I've just scuffed witih 220, degreased and primed good to go.

The vehicle will be in dry storage in my amish build shed garage. Well as dry as we can get near the Chesapeake Bay . I'm starting to think self etching would be fine, but really unsure.

Epoxy paint primer is excellent. The only issue I learned the hard way is depending on the brand, it hardens up after x amount of time/days. You then have to sand it again to open the pores so whatever is being laid onto it will stick. The sanding/scuffing gives the epoxy a tooth for the next layer to adhere too.
I painted a door one time over epoxy that was final sanded. I waited too many days before spraying the color on. I taped something to the paint a few weeks later. When I removed the tape, it lifted the paint right off down to the epoxy. The paint did not adhere to the epoxy that had set up again after sanding.
I know some folks spray the epoxy and let it set up for a few hours. They then spray a high build primer over it so it melts or adheres into the epoxy. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
