Ok good intel thank you. The plan is to spend all winter doing bodywork and then lay down the Velvet green in April or May. So we're talking 5-6 months out. The vehicle will be stored indoors.
Am I a better candidate for self etching then? |
Your best bet would be to go talk to your local auto body paints supply house. Get their view on what types of primer would work best for your application. Paint/primers change every year.
Epoxy primer is very hard and durable and if used correctly, works great. I just know when it fully cures and hardens, it has to be sanded to open it back up for good adhesion of the coat being sprayed on top of it.
Again, the guys selling it can give you all the specifics. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Hey thanks man, yeah that pic was our first trip in the "distraction" to this build, even though recent you just rough back a really fun memory. First time on the road since '89. Sometimes you gotta follow your impulses and do what's right at the moment.
And now my impulses say finish this truck! _________________ Shadetree Westy

Thanks homie. Today was just awesome. He did a really great job and let me use his booth to spray the epoxy primer.
To say I'm excited would be an understatement. I have tons of work to do, don't let the pics fool you! Progress.
Here I am gettin to it. The blaster was taking pics, I didn't even know it.

That looks awesome! Who did the blasting? Is it someone who is doing you a favor, or is this something they regularly do? |
Curious what blasting medium they used? _________________ WANTED:

Ok I'm back. We ended up selling our home and moving out to the country where I now have a decent building and lots of space. After we moved in March 2018 I focused on all the other vw maintenance items that needed to happen before getting back to the single cab. For the past month I have been really logging in the hours. Goal is to finish this truck this year, yup a tall order but I think it can happen.
A few months ago I picked up a lift. Man I could have really used this a couple of years ago. Main focus right now is to prep chassis, engine bay, treasure chest area and cab for paint. Following glideking's lead I decided to paint all these areas before installing the new load bed.
Some surface rust but that's cleaning up pretty quickly.
My helper stretched out. Here he is blasting some parts. Decided to prep a set of hubcaps so I can spray them grey when I do my chassis.
Picked up this basket which was chrome. I blasted it and painted it black. I think it will go great with the black commercial steering wheel.
Pulled the transaxle last night. I'm having a local shop rebuild the trans and RBG's. Going to sit tall and proud and remain stock because I want to use this as a work truck.
