I recently failed emission and so I replaced some parts and gave the van the good old tune up. I replaced the cat, 02 sensor, distributor, plugs, ignition wires, air filter. I took it for a spin around the block and the temp got up around 3/4 on the gauge. This is hotter than usual. Would anything I replaced cause it to run hot. I set the timing with a gun at 3k rpm and set it with the 0 mark with the gun set to 35. The van is now idling lower and running smoother than it used to. Ideas?

You lower idle and hotter coolant suggest retarded timing. Try it at 40 degrees using the same gun, method and reference point for consistency sake.

If I wanted to retard the timing wouldn't i set it to 30 degrees. Wouldn't 40 degrees advance it?

Retarded timing can cause hot runing especilly around town. I'm suggesting that you try advancing it 5 degrees from 35 to about 40 and see how it is. If you go too far, you'll get pre-igniton (spark knock) and run hot under load. Older engines can develop a taste for some additional advance. Experiment.

It would be nice to know which of the three gasoline engines VW used in the rigs for the US market you have. They do not all time the same.
