What is it with some of the Newbies on here and there outrageous asking Prices on Vanagons.
Many of these Forsale ads are posted by new or recently joined samba members.
I can understand that if someone can earn a Markup on a Vehicle all well and good, but many are false claims and just causing a chain reaction in prices.
Example.
I know for a fact that this Van was sold by a friend to another Friend in NJ who sold it to this seller for like 12k last Spring. That was three owners who used it with dealer tags with no title change. I've driven it, worked on it and know this Van it has mismatched paint, and body filler. The Van has had a fair amount of body work, bumpers replaced, etc and shows it. Yet the current owner is claiming it as damn near a museum piece.
This is not a West Coast Van, It's always been a East Coaster and shows it.
The Current owner bought it for 12k and now is asking 35K what's wrong with this picture.
Heck, it doesn't even have the GoWesty wheels, there freaken Fake, hubcaps already...
Can you say Ouch?

The pure entertainment value of the Samba classifieds is priceless.
And now the most asked question in the technical forums is "how much did you pay"?

I have no problems with someone turning a profit, of any amount.
If someone will be parting with $35k for any van, it is up to them to inspect it and beware of what there are buying. I am sure a wise buyer will see the defects that you have pointed out, after all you have stated that the van "shows it". If a buyer misses the things that you claim "shows it", then the buyer is simply willing to part with his money to fast.
he states it has only two owners, the original and him, maybe he doesn't know your friend and your friend's friend owned it as dealers, as that would not show up as owners with a DMV search. after all you did state there was no change in registration for three owners.
The seller also claims a recent rebuilt engine, tranny new clutch, tires water pump, fuel lines etc... so maybe the van is worth a good deal to someone that don't want to hassle with it.
he does not claim the van is bondo free,
But I do think the ad is very silly. Like where the seller is including a shift bushing he bought with intent to install, then decided not to install it after he discovered the Van's importance! That is just plain non-sense.
as always buyer beware, but I have no problem with a mark up, I do not see anything like a lie in his ad per what you have stated. and who knows what your friend's friend told him when he was sold the van? Do you even know?
I must ask, what do you have against the seller? |

The poster of that ad writes:
..this is defiantly (sic) 9923 of 10000 Westfalias’ produced that final year and that it is most likely (which I heard from talking to a number of specialists and dealers is that this is most likely the last one with that configuration ever made and probably the last one ever imported to the United States, and may even be the lat surviving Vanagon Westy).
WOW!! Then based on that "Orly Blue" ad, I must have the VERY VERY VERY last Westy ever produced. Because mine has an 04/91 on its door placard too, but it's number 10,540. I ain't talked any specialists or dealers, but mine is so rare that it was produced after they even stopped making Westys. And I only paid $9000 for mine a year and a half back. (Which admittedly, was a fricking steal). Wonder if I could sell mine for $135K since it's even rarer than that one.

your vanagon is certainly worth much more that an infinite amount of money, maybe ten times an infinity amount of money. It was after all built after the last of the last, it has so much importance you best not change anything on it ever again, even the oil!
May I please be allowed one breath of air let of the tire from your important beyond the last of the last Vanagon? I will pay you five times infinity for that one breath of tire air to fill my lungs!!!!
there is nothing funnier than a desperate salesman! |

The Engine wasn't Rebuilt.
It was Re-Sealed by the guy he bought it from. And had a rebuilt trans clutch etc before that.
as was 90% of the other items he's claiming or eluding that was done while he owned it.
From what I've put together so far about the only new work done on the Van after his 12k Purchase were accessories purchases windshield wipers maybe some AC work etc. WoW Let me think. He paid 12k and selling for 35k..
Those are some expensive gold plated accessories. At 23k Markup
And almost the last Westy... Come on give me a Break, if there were 10000 built and this is 9923 there are 77 MIA's....
But knowing this Van I'd prefer to pay a decent price for a West Coaster knowing the body and Bondo work needed to fix and correct this rig.

I met a guy who had the last Westy ever built. Then, a few years later, I met another guy who also had the last Westy ever built.
Sort of like 'The gun that killed Billy the Kid'.
Only possible comment for them was 'Oh really?'. |

Here I was thinking of offering a guy $300 for the hard top he has for sale. Course it has been for sale for $6000 for a couple of years now. |

I noticed this thread starts saying the ad was for $35k, now it's at $25k obo. Perhaps he's lurking on this thread.
I've seen several times now lately where people will post on here w/ ridiculous prices hoping for a sucker....er, I mean motivated collector.
Are vans actually selling at these prices without the full treatment of a custom rebuild? That price still seems high for a Syncro, let alone a 2WD. _________________ _____________________

I suspect that the average actual sale price and average asking price for vanagons in general is very far apart.
people are mostly smart. they wont buy a $30K van that needs another $30K of work. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Given the preponderance of "what is this worth?" or "what did you pay?", I've been thinking we should have a singe thread (sticky or not), called the Vanagon Values thread. It could be the ONE place for discussing vanagon values...not only would it consolidate the information, but it could even be an acceptable place for posting your van and asking for input on pricing. People seem to like discussing this topic (there's certainly plenty of nuance to be parsed), and it could serve to help capture ACTUAL sale prices...when available. _________________ '77 Bay Window / '89 Caratsburg (aka. the Stormtrooper) |
